^23 (A)The advice of Ahithophel, which he ^[a]gave in those days, was as if one inquired of the word of God; ^(B)so was all the advice of Ahithophel regarded by both David and Absalom.

¹⁴ Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said, “The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel.” For ^(A)the Lord had ordained to thwart the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the Lord might bring calamity on Absalom.

²³ Now when Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not ^[a]followed, he ^[b]saddled his donkey and arose and went to his home, to ^(A)his city, and ^[c](B)set his house in order, and ^(C)strangled himself; thus he died and was buried in the grave of his father.
