19 People told Joab what had happened, “Look, the king is crying and mourning for Absalom.” So the joy of victory turned to sadness for everyone. It was a very sad day because the people heard, “The king is mourning for his son.”

The people came into the city quietly as if they were the ones who had been defeated in battle.

19 [a]Joab was told, “The king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.” And for the whole army the victory that day was turned into mourning, because on that day the troops heard it said, “The king is grieving for his son.” The men stole into the city that day as men steal in who are ashamed when they flee from battle.
