19 It was reported to Joab that the king was weeping and mourning over Absalom. The victory that day was turned into mourning for all of the people, for the people heard that day, “The king is grieving for his son.” So the people entered the city by stealth that day, as a people who have been disgraced steal away when they flee from battle.

19 [a]Joab was told, “The king is weeping and mourning for Absalom.” And for the whole army the victory that day was turned into mourning, because on that day the troops heard it said, “The king is grieving for his son.” The men stole into the city that day as men steal in who are ashamed when they flee from battle.
