Then the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.(A) They told David: “It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul.”(B)

David sent messengers to the men of Jabesh-gilead and said to them, “The Lord bless you, because you have shown this kindness to Saul your lord when you buried him. Now, may the Lord show kindness and faithfulness to you, and I will also show the same goodness to you because you have done this deed. Therefore, be strong and courageous, for though Saul your lord is dead, the house of Judah has anointed me king over them.”

Then the men of Judah came to Hebron,(A) and there they anointed(B) David king over the tribe of Judah.

When David was told that it was the men from Jabesh Gilead(C) who had buried Saul, he sent messengers to them to say to them, “The Lord bless(D) you for showing this kindness to Saul your master by burying him. May the Lord now show you kindness and faithfulness,(E) and I too will show you the same favor because you have done this. Now then, be strong(F) and brave, for Saul your master is dead, and the people of Judah have anointed me king over them.”

12 he went and got the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan from the leaders of Jabesh-gilead. They had stolen them from the public square of Beth-shan where the Philistines had hung the bodies the day the Philistines killed Saul at Gilboa.(A) 13 David had the bones brought from there. They gathered up the bones of Saul’s family who had been hung[a] 14 and buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan at Zela in the land of Benjamin in the tomb of Saul’s father Kish. They did everything the king commanded. After this, God answered prayer for the land.(B)
