But Joab said to the king, (A)“May the Lord your God add to the people a hundred times as many as they are, while the eyes of my lord the king still see it, but why does my lord the king delight in this thing?” But the king's word prevailed against Joab and the commanders of the army. So Joab and the commanders of the army went out from the presence of the king to number the people of Israel. They crossed the Jordan and began from (B)Aroer,[a] and from the city that is in the middle of the (C)valley, towards Gad and on to (D)Jazer.

But Joab(A) replied to the king, “May the Lord your God multiply the troops a hundred times over,(B) and may the eyes of my lord the king see it. But why does my lord the king want to do such a thing?”

The king’s word, however, overruled Joab and the army commanders; so they left the presence of the king to enroll the fighting men of Israel.

After crossing the Jordan, they camped near Aroer,(C) south of the town in the gorge, and then went through Gad and on to Jazer.(D)
