Pray for Us

Finally, brothers,[a] (A)pray for us, that (B)the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored,[b] as happened among you, and (C)that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For (D)not all have faith. But (E)the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and (F)guard you against (G)the evil one.[c] And (H)we have confidence in the Lord about you, that you are doing and will do the things that we command. May the Lord (I)direct your hearts to the love of God and to the steadfastness of Christ.

Warning Against Idleness

Now we command you, brothers, (J)in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (K)that you keep away from any (L)brother (M)who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know (N)how you ought to imitate us, because (O)we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone's bread without paying for it, but (P)with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was (Q)not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves (R)an example to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: (S)If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. 11 For we hear that some among you (T)walk in idleness, not busy at work, but (U)busybodies. 12 Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.[d]

13 As for you, brothers, (V)do not grow weary in doing good. 14 If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and (W)have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed. 15 (X)Do not regard him as an enemy, but (Y)warn him as a brother.

Benediction

16 Now may (Z)the Lord of peace himself (AA)give you peace at all times in every way. (AB)The Lord be with you all.

17 I, Paul, write (AC)this greeting with my own hand. This is the sign of genuineness in every letter of mine; it is the way I write. 18 (AD)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

Greeting

Paul, (AE)an apostle of Christ Jesus (AF)by command of (AG)God our Savior and of Christ Jesus (AH)our hope,

To Timothy, (AI)my true child in the faith:

(AJ)Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

Warning Against False Teachers

(AK)As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not (AL)to teach any different doctrine, nor (AM)to devote themselves to myths and endless (AN)genealogies, which promote (AO)speculations rather than the stewardship[e] from God that is by faith. The aim of our charge is love (AP)that issues from a pure heart and (AQ)a good conscience and (AR)a sincere faith. Certain persons, by (AS)swerving from these, have wandered away into (AT)vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, (AU)without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.

Now we know that (AV)the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, understanding this, that the (AW)law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, 10 the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers,[f] liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to (AX)sound[g] doctrine, 11 in accordance with (AY)the gospel of the glory of (AZ)the blessed God (BA)with which I have been entrusted.

Christ Jesus Came to Save Sinners

12 I thank him (BB)who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, (BC)appointing me to his service, 13 though formerly I was a blasphemer, (BD)persecutor, and insolent opponent. But (BE)I received mercy (BF)because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14 and (BG)the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the (BH)faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 The saying is (BI)trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus (BJ)came into the world to save sinners, (BK)of whom I am the foremost. 16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life. 17 To (BL)the King of the ages, (BM)immortal, (BN)invisible, (BO)the only God, (BP)be honor and glory forever and ever.[h] Amen.

18 This charge (BQ)I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with (BR)the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may (BS)wage the good warfare, 19 (BT)holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have (BU)made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are (BV)Hymenaeus and (BW)Alexander, whom I (BX)have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to (BY)blaspheme.

Pray for All People

First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, (BZ)for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and (CA)dignified in every way. This is good, and (CB)it is pleasing in the sight of (CC)God our Savior, who desires (CD)all people to be saved and (CE)to come to (CF)the knowledge of the truth. For (CG)there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man[i] Christ Jesus, (CH)who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is (CI)the testimony given (CJ)at the proper time. (CK)For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle ((CL)I am telling the truth, I am not lying), (CM)a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

I desire then that (CN)in every place the men should pray, (CO)lifting (CP)holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also (CQ)that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 (CR)but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn quietly (CS)with all submissiveness. 12 (CT)I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 (CU)For Adam was formed first, (CV)then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but (CW)the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through (CX)childbearing—if they continue in (CY)faith and love and holiness, with self-control.

Qualifications for Overseers

The saying is (CZ)trustworthy: If anyone aspires to (DA)the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore (DB)an overseer[j] must be above reproach, (DC)the husband of one wife,[k] (DD)sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, (DE)hospitable, (DF)able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but (DG)gentle, not quarrelsome, (DH)not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity (DI)keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for (DJ)God's church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may (DK)become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by (DL)outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into (DM)a snare of the devil.

Qualifications for Deacons

(DN)Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued,[l] (DO)not addicted to much wine, (DP)not greedy for dishonest gain. They must (DQ)hold the mystery of the faith with (DR)a clear conscience. 10 And (DS)let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. 11 (DT)Their wives likewise[m] must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, (DU)faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons each be (DV)the husband of one wife, (DW)managing their children and their own households well. 13 For (DX)those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

The Mystery of Godliness

14 I hope to come to you soon, but I am writing these things to you so that, 15 if I delay, you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth. 16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness:

(DY)He[n] was manifested in the flesh,
    vindicated[o] by the Spirit,[p]
        (DZ)seen by angels,
(EA)proclaimed among the nations,
    (EB)believed on in the world,
        (EC)taken up in glory.

Some Will Depart from the Faith

Now (ED)the Spirit expressly says that (EE)in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to (EF)deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of (EG)liars whose consciences are seared, (EH)who forbid marriage and (EI)require abstinence from foods (EJ)that God created (EK)to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For (EL)everything created by God is good, and (EM)nothing is to be rejected if it is (EN)received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy (EO)by the word of God and prayer.

A Good Servant of Christ Jesus

(EP)If you put these things before the brothers,[q] you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, being trained in the words of the faith and of the good doctrine that you have (EQ)followed. Have nothing to do with irreverent, (ER)silly myths. Rather (ES)train yourself for godliness; for while (ET)bodily training is of some value, godliness (EU)is of value in every way, as (EV)it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is (EW)trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. 10 For to this end we toil and strive,[r] because we have our hope set on the living God, (EX)who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.

11 Command and teach (EY)these things. 12 (EZ)Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers (FA)an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 (FB)Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you (FC)by prophecy when the council of elders (FD)laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them,[s] so that (FE)all may see your progress. 16 (FF)Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save (FG)both yourself and (FH)your hearers.

Request for Prayer

As for other matters, brothers and sisters,(A) pray for us(B) that the message of the Lord(C) may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you.(D) And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people,(E) for not everyone has faith. But the Lord is faithful,(F) and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.(G) We have confidence(H) in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. May the Lord direct your hearts(I) into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.

Warning Against Idleness

In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,(J) we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from(K) every believer who is idle and disruptive(L) and does not live according to the teaching[a] you received from us.(M) For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example.(N) We were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked(O) night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help,(P) but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate.(Q) 10 For even when we were with you,(R) we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work(S) shall not eat.”

11 We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies.(T) 12 Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ(U) to settle down and earn the food they eat.(V) 13 And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.(W)

14 Take special note of anyone who does not obey our instruction in this letter. Do not associate with them,(X) in order that they may feel ashamed.(Y) 15 Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as you would a fellow believer.(Z)

Final Greetings

16 Now may the Lord of peace(AA) himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.(AB)

17 I, Paul, write this greeting in my own hand,(AC) which is the distinguishing mark in all my letters. This is how I write.

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.(AD)

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the command of God(AE) our Savior(AF) and of Christ Jesus our hope,(AG)

To Timothy(AH) my true son(AI) in the faith:

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.(AJ)

Timothy Charged to Oppose False Teachers

As I urged you when I went into Macedonia,(AK) stay there in Ephesus(AL) so that you may command certain people not to teach false doctrines(AM) any longer or to devote themselves to myths(AN) and endless genealogies.(AO) Such things promote controversial speculations(AP) rather than advancing God’s work—which is by faith. The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart(AQ) and a good conscience(AR) and a sincere faith.(AS) Some have departed from these and have turned to meaningless talk. They want to be teachers(AT) of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.(AU)

We know that the law is good(AV) if one uses it properly. We also know that the law is made not for the righteous(AW) but for lawbreakers and rebels,(AX) the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine(AY) 11 that conforms to the gospel concerning the glory of the blessed God, which he entrusted to me.(AZ)

The Lord’s Grace to Paul

12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength,(BA) that he considered me trustworthy, appointing me to his service.(BB) 13 Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor(BC) and a violent man, I was shown mercy(BD) because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.(BE) 14 The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly,(BF) along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.(BG)

15 Here is a trustworthy saying(BH) that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners(BI)—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy(BJ) so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience(BK) as an example for those who would believe(BL) in him and receive eternal life.(BM) 17 Now to the King(BN) eternal, immortal,(BO) invisible,(BP) the only God,(BQ) be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.(BR)

The Charge to Timothy Renewed

18 Timothy, my son,(BS) I am giving you this command in keeping with the prophecies once made about you,(BT) so that by recalling them you may fight the battle well,(BU) 19 holding on to faith and a good conscience,(BV) which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith.(BW) 20 Among them are Hymenaeus(BX) and Alexander,(BY) whom I have handed over to Satan(BZ) to be taught not to blaspheme.

Instructions on Worship

I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers,(CA) intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority,(CB) that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness(CC) and holiness. This is good, and pleases(CD) God our Savior,(CE) who wants(CF) all people(CG) to be saved(CH) and to come to a knowledge of the truth.(CI) For there is one God(CJ) and one mediator(CK) between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus,(CL) who gave himself as a ransom(CM) for all people. This has now been witnessed to(CN) at the proper time.(CO) And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle—I am telling the truth, I am not lying(CP)—and a true and faithful teacher(CQ) of the Gentiles.(CR)

Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands(CS) without anger or disputing. I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes,(CT) 10 but with good deeds,(CU) appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

11 A woman[b] should learn in quietness and full submission.(CV) 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man;[c] she must be quiet.(CW) 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.(CX) 14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner.(CY) 15 But women[d] will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love(CZ) and holiness with propriety.

Qualifications for Overseers and Deacons

Here is a trustworthy saying:(DA) Whoever aspires to be an overseer(DB) desires a noble task. Now the overseer is to be above reproach,(DC) faithful to his wife,(DD) temperate,(DE) self-controlled, respectable, hospitable,(DF) able to teach,(DG) not given to drunkenness,(DH) not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome,(DI) not a lover of money.(DJ) He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him, and he must do so in a manner worthy of full[e] respect.(DK) (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?)(DL) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited(DM) and fall under the same judgment(DN) as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders,(DO) so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.(DP)

In the same way, deacons[f](DQ) are to be worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in much wine,(DR) and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience.(DS) 10 They must first be tested;(DT) and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as deacons.

11 In the same way, the women[g] are to be worthy of respect, not malicious talkers(DU) but temperate(DV) and trustworthy in everything.

12 A deacon must be faithful to his wife(DW) and must manage his children and his household well.(DX) 13 Those who have served well gain an excellent standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus.

Reasons for Paul’s Instructions

14 Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, 15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church(DY) of the living God,(DZ) the pillar and foundation of the truth. 16 Beyond all question, the mystery(EA) from which true godliness(EB) springs is great:

He appeared in the flesh,(EC)
    was vindicated by the Spirit,[h]
was seen by angels,
    was preached among the nations,(ED)
was believed on in the world,
    was taken up in glory.(EE)

The Spirit(EF) clearly says that in later times(EG) some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits(EH) and things taught by demons. Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.(EI) They forbid people to marry(EJ) and order them to abstain from certain foods,(EK) which God created(EL) to be received with thanksgiving(EM) by those who believe and who know the truth. For everything God created is good,(EN) and nothing is to be rejected(EO) if it is received with thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God(EP) and prayer.

If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters,[i] you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith(EQ) and of the good teaching that you have followed.(ER) Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales;(ES) rather, train yourself to be godly.(ET) For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things,(EU) holding promise for both the present life(EV) and the life to come.(EW) This is a trustworthy saying(EX) that deserves full acceptance. 10 That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God,(EY) who is the Savior of all people,(EZ) and especially of those who believe.

11 Command and teach these things.(FA) 12 Don’t let anyone look down on you(FB) because you are young, but set an example(FC) for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith(FD) and in purity. 13 Until I come,(FE) devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture,(FF) to preaching and to teaching. 14 Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy(FG) when the body of elders(FH) laid their hands on you.(FI)

15 Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. 16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save(FJ) both yourself and your hearers.
