²⁸ So Joab^(A) blew the trumpet,^(B) and all the troops came to a halt; they no longer pursued Israel, nor did they fight anymore.

¹⁶ Joab^(A) son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat^(B) son of Ahilud was recorder;^{(C) 17} Zadok^(D) son of Ahitub and Ahimelek son of Abiathar^(E) were priests; Seraiah was secretary;^{(F) 18} Benaiah^(G) son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites^(H) and Pelethites; and David’s sons were priests.^[a]

² So the king said to Joab^(A) and the army commanders^[a] with him, “Go throughout the tribes of Israel from Dan to Beersheba^(B) and enroll^(C) the fighting men, so that I may know how many there are.”
