The Sorcerer’s Sin

14 Now when the (A)apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them (B)that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For (C)as yet He had fallen upon none of them. (D)They had only been baptized in (E)the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then (F)they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’ hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands may receive the Holy Spirit.”

20 But Peter said to him, “Your money perish with you, because (G)you thought that (H)the gift of God could be purchased with money! 21 You have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your (I)heart is not right in the sight of God. 22 Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God (J)if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are (K)poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.”

14 Now when (C)the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them (D)Peter and John, 15 who came down and prayed for them (E)that they would receive the Holy Spirit. 16 (For He had (F)not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been (G)baptized [a]in the name of the Lord Jesus.) 17 Then they (H)began laying their hands on them, and they were (I)receiving the Holy Spirit. 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give this authority to me as well, so that everyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could (J)acquire the gift of God with money! 21 You have (K)no part or share in this [b]matter, for your heart is not (L)right before God. 22 Therefore, repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, (M)if possible, the intention of your heart will be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are [c]in the gall of bitterness and in (N)the [d]bondage of unrighteousness.”

13 Even Simon believed [Philip’s message of salvation]; and after being baptized, he continued on with Philip, and as he watched the attesting signs and great miracles taking place, he was constantly amazed.

14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that [the people of] Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15 They came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit; 16 for He had not yet fallen on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus [as His possession]. 17 Then Peter and John laid their hands on them [one by one], and they received the Holy Spirit. 18 Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this authority and power too, so that anyone on whom I lay my hands may receive the Holy Spirit.” 20 But Peter said to him, “May your money be destroyed along with you, because you thought you could buy the [free] gift of God with money! 21 You have no part or share in this matter, because your heart (motive, purpose) is not right before God.(A) 22 So repent of this wickedness of yours, and pray to the Lord that, if possible, this thought of your heart may be forgiven you. 23 For I see that you are [a]provoked by bitterness and bound by sin.”(B)
