⁴ And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues,^[a] as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.^(A)

The Baptism of Cornelius. ^44 (A)While Peter was still speaking these things, the holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the word.^{[a] 45} The circumcised believers who had accompanied Peter were astounded that the gift of the holy Spirit should have been poured out on the Gentiles also, ⁴⁶ for they could hear them speaking in tongues and glorifying God. Then Peter responded, ⁴⁷ “Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people, who have received the holy Spirit even as we have?”^(B)

⁸ And God, who knows the heart, bore witness by granting them the holy Spirit just as he did us.^{(A) 9} He made no distinction between us and them, for by faith he purified their hearts.^(B)

² He said to them, “Did you receive the holy Spirit when you became believers?” They answered him, “We have never even heard that there is a holy Spirit.”
