9 ‘The patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him, 10 and rescued him from all his afflictions, and enabled him to win favour and to show wisdom when he stood before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who appointed him ruler over Egypt and over all his household. 11 Now there came a famine throughout Egypt and Canaan, and great suffering, and our ancestors could find no food.

9 “Because the patriarchs were jealous of Joseph,(A) they sold him as a slave into Egypt.(B) But God was with him(C) 10 and rescued him from all his troubles. He gave Joseph wisdom and enabled him to gain the goodwill of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So Pharaoh made him ruler over Egypt and all his palace.(D)
11 “Then a famine struck all Egypt and Canaan, bringing great suffering, and our ancestors could not find food.(E)
