14 But they, having gone through[a] from Perga, arrived at Pisidian Antioch. And having entered into the synagogue on the day of the Sabbath, they sat-down. 15 And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the synagogue-officials sent forth a message to them, saying, “Men, brothers, if there is any word of exhortation[b] among you for the people, speak”.

Paul Proclaims That John Announced The Coming of The Davidic Savior, Jesus

16 And Paul, having stood up, and having motioned with his hand, said “Men, Israelites, and the ones fearing God: listen. 17 The God of this people Israel chose our fathers. And He lifted-up the people during the stay in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm led them out of it. 18 And for about a forty year period He put-up-with[c] them in the wilderness. 19 And having brought-down seven[d] nations in the land of Canaan, He gave them their land as-an-inheritance 20 about[e] in [a total of] four-hundred and fifty years. And after these things He gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. 21 And from there they asked-for a king. And God gave them Saul— the son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin— for forty years. 22 And having removed him, He raised-up David for them for a king— concerning whom also having testified, He said, ‘I found David the son of Jesse, a man in-accordance-with[f] My heart, who will do all My desires’. 23 From the seed of this one, in accordance with the promise, God brought a Savior for[g] Israel, Jesus— 24 John having publicly-proclaimed a baptism of repentance for all the people of Israel before the presence of His coming. 25 And as John was completing his course, he was saying, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not the One. But behold— He is coming after me, of Whom I am not worthy to untie the sandal of His feet’.

Fulfilling The Scriptures, The Rulers Killed Jesus And God Raised Him Up

26 “Men, brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and the ones among you fearing God: the message of this salvation was sent-out to us. 27 For the ones dwelling in Jerusalem and their rulers, not having known this One and the voices of the prophets being read every Sabbath— having condemned Him, fulfilled them. 28 And having found no charge worthy of death, they asked Pilate that He be executed. 29 And when they fulfilled all the things having been written about Him, having taken Him down from the cross, they laid Him in a tomb. 30 But God raised Him from the dead— 31 Who appeared for many days to the ones having come up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who now are His witnesses to the people. 32 And we are announcing-as-good-news-to you the promise having been made to the fathers— 33 that God has fulfilled this promise for us their children, having raised-up[h] Jesus, as it has also been written in the second Psalm: ‘You are My Son. Today I have fathered You’ [Ps 2:7]. 34 And that[i] He raised Him up from the dead as One no longer going to return to decay, He has spoken in this manner [in Isa 55:3]: that ‘I will give You the holy, trustworthy[j] things of [k] David’. 35 Therefore[l] also in another place it says, ‘You will not give[m] Your holy One to see[n] decay’ [Ps 16:10]. 36 For David, having served the purpose[o] of God in his own generation, fell asleep and was put-with[p] his fathers, and saw decay. 37 But He Whom God raised did not see decay.

Forgiveness Is Now Being Proclaimed To You. Don’t Be Scoffers

38 “Therefore let it be known to you, men, brothers, that through this One forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed to you. And from all things from which you could not be declared-righteous by the Law of Moses— 39 by[q] this One everyone believing is declared-righteous. 40 Therefore be watching-out that the thing having been spoken in the Prophets [in Hab 1:5] may not come upon you: 41 ‘Look, scoffers, and marvel and perish. Because I am working a work in your days, a work which you will never believe if someone tells you in detail’”.

At The Next Sabbath Meeting, The Jews Contradict Paul. He Turns To The Gentiles

42 And while they were going out, they were begging that these words might be spoken to them on the next Sabbath. 43 And the gathering[r] having been released[s], many of the Jews and of the worshiping proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas— who, speaking to them, were persuading them to continue-in the grace of God. 44 Now on the coming Sabbath, almost the whole city was gathered together to hear the word of the Lord. 45 But the Jews, having seen the crowds, were filled with jealousy. And they were contradicting[t] the things being spoken by Paul, blaspheming. 46 And Paul and Barnabas, having spoken-boldly, said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first. Since you are rejecting it and judging yourselves not worthy of eternal life, behold— we are turning to the Gentiles. 47 For thus the Lord has commanded us [in Isa 49:6]: ‘I have placed you for[u] a light to the Gentiles, that you may be a light for salvation as far as the last place of the earth’”. 48 And the Gentiles, having heard it, were rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord. And all who had been appointed[v] to eternal life believed.

The Jews Drive Paul And Barnabas Out of Their Districts

49 And the word of the Lord was being carried[w] through the whole region[x]. 50 But the Jews incited the prominent worshiping women and the leading men of the city, and aroused a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out from their districts. 51 But the ones, having shaken-out the dust from their feet against them, went to Iconium. 52 And the disciples were being filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

In Iconium, Paul And Barnabas Again Proclaim, And Then Flee a Plot To Kill Them

14 Now it came about in Iconium that according to the same plan, they entered into the synagogue of the Jews and spoke in this manner, so that a large number of both Jews and Greeks believed. But the Jews having disobeyed[y] aroused and embittered[z] the souls of the Gentiles against the brothers. So indeed they spent a considerable time speaking-boldly for the Lord, Who was testifying to the word of His grace, granting[aa] that signs and wonders be taking place by their hands. And the multitude of the city was divided— indeed some were with the Jews; and others with the apostles. But when an attempt[ab] came about by both the Gentiles and Jews together with their rulers to mistreat and to stone them, having become-aware, they fled[ac] to the cities of Lycaonia[ad]— Lystra and Derbe, and the surrounding-region. And there they were announcing-the-good-news.

In Lystra, Paul Heals a Man And Is Declared a God, Then Is Stoned

And in Lystra, a certain man powerless in the feet was sitting— a lame one from his mother’s womb, who never walked. This one heard Paul speaking— who, having looked-intently at him, and having seen that he had faith that he might be restored, 10 said with a loud voice, “Stand up straight on your feet”. And he leaped and was walking. 11 And the crowds, having seen what Paul did, raised their voice, saying in Lycaonian, “The gods came down to us, having become-like men!” 12 And they were calling Barnabas “Zeus[ae]”, and Paul “Hermes[af]”, since he was the one leading the speaking. 13 And the priest of the temple of Zeus being before[ag] the city, having brought bulls and garlands to the gates, was intending to offer-sacrifice with the crowds. 14 But the apostles, Barnabas and Paul— having heard-of it, having torn their garments— leaped-out into the crowd, crying-out 15 and saying, “Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men of-like-nature to you, announcing-the-good-news to turn you from these worthless[ah] things to the living God, Who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all the things in them, 16 Who allowed all the nations to be going their ways in the generations having gone-by. 17 And yet He did not leave Himself without-witness[ai]: doing-good, giving you rains from heaven and fruitful[aj] seasons, filling your hearts with food and gladness”. 18 And saying these things, with-difficulty they restrained[ak] the crowds, that they might not offer-sacrifice to them. 19 But Jews came-over from Antioch and Iconium. And having won-over[al] the crowds, and having stoned Paul, they were dragging him outside of the city, thinking[am] that he was dead[an]. 20 But the disciples having surrounded him— having stood-up, he entered into the city.

In Derbe They Make Disciples, Then Return Home, Strengthening The Churches

And on the next day he went forth with Barnabas to Derbe. 21 And having announced-the-good-news-to that city, and having made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging[ao] them to continue-in[ap] the faith, and that “It-is-necessary that we enter into the kingdom of God through many afflictions”. 23 And having appointed elders for them in each church, having prayed with fastings, they commended[aq] them to the Lord in Whom they had believed.

14 From Perga they went on to Pisidian Antioch.(A) On the Sabbath(B) they entered the synagogue(C) and sat down. 15 After the reading from the Law(D) and the Prophets, the leaders of the synagogue sent word to them, saying, “Brothers, if you have a word of exhortation for the people, please speak.”

16 Standing up, Paul motioned with his hand(E) and said: “Fellow Israelites and you Gentiles who worship God, listen to me! 17 The God of the people of Israel chose our ancestors; he made the people prosper during their stay in Egypt; with mighty power he led them out of that country;(F) 18 for about forty years he endured their conduct[a](G) in the wilderness;(H) 19 and he overthrew seven nations in Canaan,(I) giving their land to his people(J) as their inheritance.(K) 20 All this took about 450 years.

“After this, God gave them judges(L) until the time of Samuel the prophet.(M) 21 Then the people asked for a king,(N) and he gave them Saul(O) son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin,(P) who ruled forty years. 22 After removing Saul,(Q) he made David their king.(R) God testified concerning him: ‘I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart;(S) he will do everything I want him to do.’(T)

23 “From this man’s descendants(U) God has brought to Israel the Savior(V) Jesus,(W) as he promised.(X) 24 Before the coming of Jesus, John preached repentance and baptism to all the people of Israel.(Y) 25 As John was completing his work,(Z) he said: ‘Who do you suppose I am? I am not the one you are looking for.(AA) But there is one coming after me whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.’(AB)

26 “Fellow children of Abraham(AC) and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation(AD) has been sent. 27 The people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus,(AE) yet in condemning him they fulfilled the words of the prophets(AF) that are read every Sabbath. 28 Though they found no proper ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.(AG) 29 When they had carried out all that was written about him,(AH) they took him down from the cross(AI) and laid him in a tomb.(AJ) 30 But God raised him from the dead,(AK) 31 and for many days he was seen by those who had traveled with him from Galilee to Jerusalem.(AL) They are now his witnesses(AM) to our people.

32 “We tell you the good news:(AN) What God promised our ancestors(AO) 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus.(AP) As it is written in the second Psalm:

“‘You are my son;
today I have become your father.’[b](AQ)

34 God raised him from the dead so that he will never be subject to decay. As God has said,

“‘I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.’[c](AR)

35 So it is also stated elsewhere:

“‘You will not let your holy one see decay.’[d](AS)

36 “Now when David had served God’s purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep;(AT) he was buried with his ancestors(AU) and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead(AV) did not see decay.

38 “Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.(AW) 39 Through him everyone who believes(AX) is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses.(AY) 40 Take care that what the prophets have said does not happen to you:

41 “‘Look, you scoffers,
    wonder and perish,
for I am going to do something in your days
    that you would never believe,
    even if someone told you.’[e](AZ)

42 As Paul and Barnabas were leaving the synagogue,(BA) the people invited them to speak further about these things on the next Sabbath. 43 When the congregation was dismissed, many of the Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who talked with them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.(BB)

44 On the next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord. 45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy. They began to contradict what Paul was saying(BC) and heaped abuse(BD) on him.

46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly: “We had to speak the word of God to you first.(BE) Since you reject it and do not consider yourselves worthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.(BF) 47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us:

“‘I have made you[f] a light for the Gentiles,(BG)
that you[g] may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.’[h](BH)

48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord;(BI) and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

49 The word of the Lord(BJ) spread through the whole region. 50 But the Jewish leaders incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.(BK) 51 So they shook the dust off their feet(BL) as a warning to them and went to Iconium.(BM) 52 And the disciples(BN) were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.(BO)

In Iconium

14 At Iconium(BP) Paul and Barnabas went as usual into the Jewish synagogue.(BQ) There they spoke so effectively that a great number(BR) of Jews and Greeks believed. But the Jews who refused to believe stirred up the other Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers.(BS) So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there, speaking boldly(BT) for the Lord, who confirmed the message of his grace by enabling them to perform signs and wonders.(BU) The people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, others with the apostles.(BV) There was a plot afoot among both Gentiles and Jews,(BW) together with their leaders, to mistreat them and stone them.(BX) But they found out about it and fled(BY) to the Lycaonian cities of Lystra and Derbe and to the surrounding country, where they continued to preach(BZ) the gospel.(CA)

In Lystra and Derbe

In Lystra there sat a man who was lame. He had been that way from birth(CB) and had never walked. He listened to Paul as he was speaking. Paul looked directly at him, saw that he had faith to be healed(CC) 10 and called out, “Stand up on your feet!”(CD) At that, the man jumped up and began to walk.(CE)

11 When the crowd saw what Paul had done, they shouted in the Lycaonian language, “The gods have come down to us in human form!”(CF) 12 Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul they called Hermes because he was the chief speaker.(CG) 13 The priest of Zeus, whose temple was just outside the city, brought bulls and wreaths to the city gates because he and the crowd wanted to offer sacrifices to them.

14 But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of this, they tore their clothes(CH) and rushed out into the crowd, shouting: 15 “Friends, why are you doing this? We too are only human,(CI) like you. We are bringing you good news,(CJ) telling you to turn from these worthless things(CK) to the living God,(CL) who made the heavens and the earth(CM) and the sea and everything in them.(CN) 16 In the past, he let(CO) all nations go their own way.(CP) 17 Yet he has not left himself without testimony:(CQ) He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons;(CR) he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”(CS) 18 Even with these words, they had difficulty keeping the crowd from sacrificing to them.

19 Then some Jews(CT) came from Antioch and Iconium(CU) and won the crowd over. They stoned Paul(CV) and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead. 20 But after the disciples(CW) had gathered around him, he got up and went back into the city. The next day he and Barnabas left for Derbe.

The Return to Antioch in Syria

21 They preached the gospel(CX) in that city and won a large number(CY) of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium(CZ) and Antioch, 22 strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith.(DA) “We must go through many hardships(DB) to enter the kingdom of God,” they said. 23 Paul and Barnabas appointed elders[i](DC) for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting,(DD) committed them to the Lord,(DE) in whom they had put their trust.
