Deuteronomy 20:7-9

7 And who is the man who got engaged to a woman and has not married her? Let him go and let him return to his house, so that he does not die in battle and another man[a] marries her.’ 8 And the officials shall continue to speak to the troops, and they shall say, ‘What man[b] is afraid and disheartened?[c] Let him go, and let him return to his house, and let him not cause the heart of his brothers to melt[d] like his.’ 9 And when the officials have finished speaking[e] to the army troops, then they shall appoint commanders of divisions at the head of the troops.

7 Has anyone become pledged to a woman and not married her? Let him go home, or he may die in battle and someone else marry her.(A)” 8 Then the officers shall add, “Is anyone afraid or fainthearted? Let him go home so that his fellow soldiers will not become disheartened too.”(B) 9 When the officers have finished speaking to the army, they shall appoint commanders over it.
