42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood,
    and my sword will devour flesh
    from the blood of the slain and the captives,
    from the long-haired heads of the enemy.”

43 Shout out with a cry of joy, you nations, because of his people,
for he will avenge the blood of his servants,[a]
and he will return vengeance to his adversaries,
but he will atone for the ground, for his people.

  1. Deuteronomy 32:43

    The Greek Old Testament and a Dead Sea Scrolls version of Deuteronomy 32:43 contain words that apparently were lost from the standard Hebrew text, possibly because of the double occurrence of the word shout for joy or rejoice. Hebrews 1:6 appears to follow the longer text of Deuteronomy 32, although Psalm 95/96:7 could be an alternate source of this quotation (the Hebrew and Greek numbers of this psalm are not the same). Here are the variant readings:

    HebrewRejoice, you nations, ⎣with⎦ his people.
    GreekRejoice, you heavens, along with him,
    and let all the sons of God worship him;
    rejoice, you nations, with his people,
    and let all the angels of God strengthen themselves in him;
    DSSRejoice, you heavens, along with him, and let all the angels worship him;
    Heb 1:6He says, “All God’s angels must worship him.”
  2. Deuteronomy 32:44 That is, Joshua

42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood,(A)
    while my sword devours flesh:(B)
the blood of the slain and the captives,
    the heads of the enemy leaders.”

43 Rejoice,(C) you nations, with his people,[a][b]
    for he will avenge the blood of his servants;(D)
he will take vengeance on his enemies(E)
    and make atonement for his land and people.(F)

44 Moses came with Joshua[c](G) son of Nun and spoke all the words of this song in the hearing of the people.
