²⁴ The Lord commanded us to follow all these statutes and to fear the Lord our God for our prosperity always and for our preservation, as it is today.

What God Requires

¹² “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you except to fear^(A) the Lord your God by walking in all his ways, to love him, and to worship the Lord your God with all your heart and all your soul?^(B)

²³ You are to eat a tenth of your grain, new wine, and fresh oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, in the presence of the Lord your God at the place where he chooses to have his name dwell,^(A) so that you will always learn to fear^(B) the Lord your God.

¹⁹ It is to remain with him, and he is to read from it all the days of his life, so that he may learn to fear^(A) the Lord his God, to observe all the words of this instruction, and to do these statutes.

¹² Gather the people—men, women, dependents, and the resident aliens within your city gates—so that they may listen and learn to fear^(A) the Lord your God and be careful to follow all the words of this law. ¹³ Then their children^(B) who do not know the law will listen and learn to fear the Lord your God as long as you live in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.”

²⁴ This is so that all the peoples of the earth may know^(A) that the Lord’s hand is strong,^(B) and so that you may always fear the Lord your God.”^(C)

The Covenant Renewal

¹⁴ “Therefore, fear the Lord and worship him in sincerity and truth.^(A) Get rid of the gods your ancestors worshiped^(B) beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and worship the Lord.

¹⁴ If you fear the Lord,^(A) worship and obey him, and if you don’t rebel against the Lord’s command, then both you and the king who reigns over you will follow the Lord your God.

²⁴ Above all, fear the Lord and worship him faithfully with all your heart; consider the great things he has done for you.^(A)

³⁴ They are still observing the former practices to this day. None of them fear the Lord or observe the statutes and ordinances, the law and commandments that the Lord had commanded the descendants of Jacob, whom he had given the name Israel.^{(A) 35} The Lord made a covenant with Jacob’s descendants and commanded them, “Do not fear other gods; do not bow in worship to them;^(B) do not serve them; do not sacrifice to them.^{(C) 36} Instead fear the Lord, who brought you up from the land of Egypt with great power^(D) and an outstretched arm.^(E) You are to bow down to him, and you are to sacrifice to him. ³⁷ You are to be careful always^(F) to observe the statutes, the ordinances, the law, and the commandments he wrote for you; do not fear other gods. ³⁸ Do not forget the covenant that I have made with you.^(G) Do not fear other gods, ³⁹ but fear the Lord your God, and he will rescue you from all your enemies.”^(H)
