Deuteronomy 8:12-18
New American Bible (Revised Edition)
12 lest, when you have eaten and are satisfied, and have built fine houses and lived in them, 13 and your herds and flocks have increased, your silver and gold has increased, and all your property has increased, 14 you then become haughty of heart and forget the Lord, your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that house of slavery; 15 he guided you through the vast and terrible wilderness with its saraph[a] serpents and scorpions, its parched and waterless ground; he brought forth water for you from the flinty rock(A) 16 and fed you in the wilderness with manna, a food unknown to your ancestors, that he might afflict you and test you, but also make you prosperous in the end. 17 Otherwise, you might say in your heart,(B) “It is my own power and the strength of my own hand that has got me this wealth.” 18 Remember then the Lord, your God, for he is the one who gives you the power to get wealth, by fulfilling, as he has now done, the covenant he swore to your ancestors.

New International Version
12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down,(A) 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget(B) the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15 He led you through the vast and dreadful wilderness,(C) that thirsty and waterless land, with its venomous snakes(D) and scorpions. He brought you water out of hard rock.(E) 16 He gave you manna(F) to eat in the wilderness, something your ancestors had never known,(G) to humble and test(H) you so that in the end it might go well with you. 17 You may say to yourself,(I) “My power and the strength of my hands(J) have produced this wealth for me.” 18 But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth,(K) and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.
