²⁴ He who ^(A)holds back his ^[a]rod hates his son,
But he who loves him ^[b](B)disciplines him diligently.

^13 (A)Do not withhold discipline from the child,
Although you ^[a]strike him with the rod, he will not die.
¹⁴ You shall ^[b]strike him with the rod
And ^(B)deliver his soul from Sheol.

¹⁵ My son, if your heart is ^(C)wise,
My own heart also will be glad;
¹⁶ And my ^[c]inmost being will exult
When your lips speak ^(D)upright things.

^17 (E)Do not let your heart be jealous of sinners,
But be zealous in the ^[d](F)fear of Yahweh ^[e]always.
¹⁸ Surely there is a ^[f](G)future,
And your ^(H)hope will not be cut off.
¹⁹ You, my son, listen and ^(I)be wise,
And ^(J)direct your heart in the way.
²⁰ Do not be with ^(K)heavy drinkers of wine,
Or with ^(L)gluttonous eaters of meat;
²¹ For the ^(M)heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty,
And ^(N)drowsiness will clothe them with rags.

^22 (O)Listen to your father who begot you,
And ^(P)do not despise your mother when she is old.
^23 (Q)Buy truth, and do not sell it,
Get wisdom and discipline and understanding.

²⁴ The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice,
And ^(R)he who begets a wise son will be glad in him.
²⁵ Let your ^(S)father and your mother be glad,
And let her rejoice who gave birth to you.

^26 (T)Give your heart to me, my son,
And let your eyes ^[g](U)delight in my ways.
²⁷ For a harlot is a ^(V)deep pit
And ^[h]a ^(W)foreign woman is a narrow well.
²⁸ Surely she ^(X)lies in wait as a robber,
And adds to the treacherous among men.

²⁹ Who has ^(Y)woe? Who has sorrow?
Who has contentions? Who has complaining?
Who has wounds without cause?
Who has redness of eyes?
³⁰ Those who ^(Z)linger long over wine,
Those who go to search out ^(AA)mixed wine.
³¹ Do not look on the wine when it glistens red,
When it ^[i]sparkles in the cup,
When it ^(AB)goes down smoothly;
³² At the end—like a serpent it ^(AC)bites,
And like a ^(AD)viper it stings.
³³ Your eyes will see strange things
And your heart will ^(AE)speak perverse things.
³⁴ And you will be like one who lies down in the heart of the sea,
Or like one who lies down on the top of a ^[j]mast.
³⁵ “They ^(AF)struck me, but I did not become ^[k]ill;
They beat me, but I did not know it.
When shall I awake?
I will ^(AG)seek yet another.”
