16 And I looked,[a] and indeed you had sinned against Yahweh your God; you had made for yourselves an image of a calf of cast metal; [b] you had turned quickly from the way that Yahweh had commanded for you. 17 And I took hold of the two tablets, and I threw them out of[c] my two hands and smashed them before your eyes. 18 And then I lay prostrate before[d] Yahweh, as earlier, forty days[e] and forty nights;[f] I did not eat food and I did not drink water because of all your sins that you committed, by doing evil in the eyes of Yahweh and so provoking him.

16 When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the Lord your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf.(A) You had turned aside quickly from the way that the Lord had commanded you. 17 So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes.

18 Then once again I fell(B) prostrate before the Lord for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water,(C) because of all the sin you had committed,(D) doing what was evil in the Lord’s sight and so arousing his anger.
