⁴ “Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.^{[a](A) 5} Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.^{(B) 6} These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart.^{(C) 7} Repeat them to your children.^(D) Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. ⁸ Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol^[b] on your forehead.^{[c](E) 9} Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your city gates.

¹⁸ When he is seated on his royal throne, he is to write a copy of this instruction for himself on a scroll in the presence of the Levitical priests.

⁵⁸ “If you are not careful to obey all the words of this law, which are written in this scroll, by fearing this glorious and awe-inspiring name—the Lord, your God—

⁶¹ The Lord will also afflict you with every sickness and plague not recorded in the book of this law, until you are destroyed.

²¹ and single him out for harm from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law.

¹⁰ when you obey the Lord your God by keeping his commands and statutes that are written in this book of the law and return to him with all your heart and all your soul.

Moses Warns the People

²⁴ When Moses had finished writing down on a scroll every single word of this law,

²⁶ “Take this book of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God so that it may remain there as a witness against you.

⁸ This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth;^(A) you are to meditate on^[a] it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do.^(B)

³¹ just as Moses the Lord’s servant had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the book of the law of Moses: an altar of uncut stones on which no iron tool has been used.^(A) Then they offered burnt offerings to the Lord and sacrificed fellowship offerings on it.
