³ You must not intermarry with them, and you must not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,^(A)

² from the nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them, and they must not intermarry with you, because they will turn your heart away to follow their gods.”^(A) To these women Solomon was deeply attached^[a] in love.

⁴ When Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away to follow other gods. He was not wholeheartedly devoted to the Lord his God, as his father David had been.^(A)

² Indeed, the Israelite men^[a] have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and their sons, so that the holy seed^(A) has become mixed with the surrounding peoples.^(B) The leaders^[b] and officials have taken the lead in this unfaithfulness!” ^(C)

²⁵ I rebuked them, cursed them, beat some of their men, and pulled out their hair.^(A) I forced them to take an oath^(B) before God and said, “You must not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters as wives for your sons or yourselves!^(C)
