16 For there is no enduring remembrance of the wise or of fools, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. How can the wise die just like fools? 17 So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me; for all is vanity and a chasing after wind.[a]
18 I hated all my toil in which I had toiled under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to those who come after me

16 For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered;(A)
the days have already come when both have been forgotten.(B)
Like the fool, the wise too must die!(C)
Toil Is Meaningless
17 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.(D) 18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.(E)
