²“Laughter,”^(A) I said, “is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?”

²I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?

³Frustration is better than laughter,^(A)
because a sad face is good for the heart.

³Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

⁶Like the crackling of thorns^(A) under the pot,
so is the laughter^(B) of fools.
This too is meaningless.

⁶For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.
