And (A)the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush. So he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, but the bush was not consumed. Then Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this (B)great sight, why the bush does not burn.”

So when the Lord saw that he turned aside to look, God called (C)to him from the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses!”

And he said, “Here I am.”

Then He said, “Do not draw near this place. (D)Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” Moreover He said, (E)“I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for (F)he was afraid to look upon God.

  1. Exodus 3:2 “Angel of the Lord” has been capitalized here to reflect the likelihood that it is God appearing in a visible form (see vv 4, 6; also note Gen 16:7).

When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called(D) to him from within the bush,(E) “Moses! Moses!”

And Moses said, “Here I am.”(F)

“Do not come any closer,”(G) God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”(H) Then he said, “I am the God of your father,[a] the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.”(I) At this, Moses hid(J) his face, because he was afraid to look at God.(K)
