Moses Inspects the Tabernacle

32 [a] So all the work of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, was completed, and the Israelites did according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses—they did it exactly so. 33 They brought the tabernacle to Moses, the tent and all its furnishings, clasps, frames, bars, posts, and bases; 34 and the coverings of ram skins dyed red, the covering of fine leather,[b] and the protecting[c] curtain; 35 the ark of the testimony and its poles, and the atonement lid; 36 the table, all its utensils, and the Bread of the Presence; 37 the pure[d] lampstand, its lamps, with the lamps set in order, and all its accessories, and oil for the light; 38 and the gold altar, and the anointing oil, and the fragrant incense; and the curtain for the entrance to the tent; 39 the bronze altar and its bronze grating, its poles, and all its utensils; the large basin with its pedestal; 40 the hangings of the courtyard, its posts and its bases, and the curtain for the gateway of the courtyard, its ropes and its tent pegs, and all the furnishings[e] for the service of the tabernacle, for the tent of meeting; 41 the woven garments for serving[f] in the sanctuary, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments for his sons to minister as priests.

42 The Israelites did all the work according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses. 43 Moses inspected[g] all the work, and[h] they had done it just as the Lord had commanded—they had done it exactly—and Moses blessed them.[i]

Setting Up the Sanctuary

40 [j] Then the Lord spoke to Moses:[k] “On the first day of the first month you are to set up[l] the tabernacle, the tent of meeting. You are to place the ark of the testimony in it and shield the ark with the special curtain. You are to bring in the table and set out the things that belong on it;[m] then you are to bring in the lampstand and set up its lamps. You are to put[n] the gold altar for incense in front of the ark of the testimony and put the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle. You are to put the altar for the burnt offering in front of the entrance to the tabernacle, the tent of meeting. You are to put the large basin between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it.[o] You are to set up the courtyard around it and put the curtain at the gate of the courtyard. And take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it, and sanctify it and all its furnishings, and it will be holy. 10 Then you are to anoint the altar for the burnt offering with[p] all its utensils; you are to sanctify the altar, and it will be the most holy altar. 11 You must also anoint the large basin and its pedestal, and you are to sanctify it.[q]

12 “You are to bring[r] Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent of meeting and wash them with water. 13 Then you are to clothe Aaron with the holy garments and anoint him and sanctify him so that he may minister as my priest. 14 You are to bring[s] his sons and clothe them with tunics 15 and anoint them just as you anointed their father, so that they may minister as my priests; their anointing will make them a priesthood that will continue throughout their generations.” 16 This is what Moses did, according to all the Lord had commanded him—so he did.

17 So the tabernacle was set up on the first day of the first month, in the second year. 18 When Moses set up the tabernacle and put its bases in place, he set up its frames, attached its bars, and set up its posts. 19 Then he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent over it, as the Lord had commanded him.[t] 20 He took the testimony and put it in the ark, attached the poles to the ark, and then put the atonement lid on the ark. 21 And he brought the ark into the tabernacle, hung[u] the protecting curtain,[v] and shielded the ark of the testimony from view, just as the Lord had commanded him.[w]

22 And Moses[x] put the table in the tent of meeting, on the north side of the tabernacle, outside the curtain. 23 And he set the bread in order on it[y] before the Lord, just as the Lord had commanded him.[z]

24 And he put the lampstand in the tent of meeting opposite the table, on the south side of the tabernacle. 25 Then he set up the lamps before the Lord, just as the Lord had commanded him.[aa]

26 And he put the gold altar in the tent of meeting in front of the curtain, 27 and he burned fragrant incense on it, just as the Lord had commanded him.[ab]

28 Then Moses[ac] put the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle. 29 He also put the altar for the burnt offering by the entrance to the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, and offered on it the burnt offering and the meal offering, just as the Lord had commanded him.[ad]

30 Then he put the large basin between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it[ae] for washing. 31 Moses and Aaron and his sons would wash their hands and their feet from it. 32 Whenever they entered[af] the tent of meeting, and whenever they approached[ag] the altar, they would wash,[ah] just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

33 And he set up the courtyard around the tabernacle and the altar, and put the curtain at the gate of the courtyard. So Moses finished the work.

34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud settled on it and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 36 But when the cloud was lifted up[ai] from the tabernacle, the Israelites would set out[aj] on all their journeys; 37 but if the cloud was not lifted up, then they would not journey farther until the day it was lifted up.[ak] 38 For the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, but fire would be[al] on it at night, in plain view[am] of all the house of Israel throughout all their journeys.

Footnotes

  1. Exodus 39:32 sn The last sections of the book bring several themes together to a full conclusion. Not only is it the completion of the tabernacle, it is the fulfillment of God’s plan revealed at the beginning of the book, i.e., to reside with his people.
  2. Exodus 39:34 tn See the note on this phrase in Exod 25:5.
  3. Exodus 39:34 tn Or “shielding” (NIV); NASB “the screening veil.”
  4. Exodus 39:37 tn Possibly meaning “pure gold lampstand.”
  5. Exodus 39:40 tn Heb “utensils, vessels.”
  6. Exodus 39:41 tn The form is the infinitive construct; it means the clothes to be used “to minister” in the Holy Place.
  7. Exodus 39:43 tn Or “examined” (NASB, TEV); NCV “looked closely at.”
  8. Exodus 39:43 tn The deictic particle draws attention to what he saw in such a way as to give the reader Moses’ point of view and a sense of his pleasure: “and behold, they….”
  9. Exodus 39:43 sn The situation and wording in Exod 39:43 are reminiscent of Gen 1:28 and 31, with the motifs of blessing people and inspecting what has been made.
  10. Exodus 40:1 sn All of Exod 39:32-40:38 could be taken as a unit. The first section (39:32-43) shows that the Israelites had carefully and accurately completed the preparation and brought everything they had made to Moses: The work of the Lord builds on the faithful obedience of the people. In the second section are the instruction and the implementation (40:1-33): The work of the Lord progresses through the unifying of the work. The last part (40:34-38) may take the most attention: When the work was completed, the glory filled the tabernacle: By his glorious presence, the Lord blesses and directs his people in their worship.
  11. Exodus 40:1 tn Heb “and Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying.”
  12. Exodus 40:2 tn Heb “you will raise,” an imperfect of instruction.
  13. Exodus 40:4 tn Heb “and you will set in order its setting” or “arrange its arrangement.” See 25:29-30 for items that belonged on the table.

  17. Exodus 40:11 sn U. Cassuto (Exodus, 480) notes that the items inside the tent did not need to be enumerated since they were already holy, but items in the courtyard needed special attention. People needed to know that items outside the tent were just as holy.
  18. Exodus 40:12 tn The verb is “bring near,” or “present,” to Yahweh.
  19. Exodus 40:14 tn The verb is also “bring near” or “present.”

  34. Exodus 40:32 tn In this explanatory verse the verb is a customary imperfect.
  35. Exodus 40:36 tn The construction uses the Niphal infinitive construct to form the temporal clause.
  36. Exodus 40:36 tn The imperfect tense in this context describes a customary action.
  37. Exodus 40:37 tn The clause uses the Niphal infinitive construct in the temporal clause: “until the day of its being taken up.”

Moses Inspects the Tabernacle(A)

32 So all the work on the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, was completed. The Israelites did everything just as the Lord commanded Moses.(B) 33 Then they brought the tabernacle(C) to Moses: the tent and all its furnishings, its clasps, frames, crossbars, posts and bases; 34 the covering of ram skins dyed red and the covering of another durable leather[a] and the shielding curtain; 35 the ark of the covenant law(D) with its poles and the atonement cover; 36 the table(E) with all its articles and the bread of the Presence;(F) 37 the pure gold lampstand(G) with its row of lamps and all its accessories,(H) and the olive oil(I) for the light; 38 the gold altar,(J) the anointing oil,(K) the fragrant incense,(L) and the curtain(M) for the entrance to the tent; 39 the bronze altar(N) with its bronze grating, its poles and all its utensils; the basin(O) with its stand; 40 the curtains of the courtyard with its posts and bases, and the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard;(P) the ropes and tent pegs for the courtyard; all the furnishings for the tabernacle, the tent of meeting; 41 and the woven garments(Q) worn for ministering in the sanctuary, both the sacred garments for Aaron the priest and the garments for his sons when serving as priests.

42 The Israelites had done all the work just as the Lord had commanded Moses.(R) 43 Moses inspected the work and saw that they had done it just as the Lord had commanded.(S) So Moses blessed(T) them.

Setting Up the Tabernacle

40 Then the Lord said to Moses: “Set up(U) the tabernacle, the tent of meeting,(V) on the first day of the first month.(W) Place the ark(X) of the covenant law in it and shield the ark with the curtain. Bring in the table(Y) and set out what belongs on it.(Z) Then bring in the lampstand(AA) and set up its lamps. Place the gold altar(AB) of incense in front of the ark of the covenant law and put the curtain at the entrance to the tabernacle.

“Place the altar(AC) of burnt offering in front of the entrance to the tabernacle, the tent of meeting; place the basin(AD) between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it. Set up the courtyard(AE) around it and put the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard.

“Take the anointing oil and anoint(AF) the tabernacle and everything in it; consecrate it and all its furnishings,(AG) and it will be holy. 10 Then anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils; consecrate(AH) the altar, and it will be most holy. 11 Anoint the basin and its stand and consecrate them.

12 “Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the tent of meeting(AI) and wash them with water.(AJ) 13 Then dress Aaron in the sacred garments,(AK) anoint him and consecrate(AL) him so he may serve me as priest. 14 Bring his sons and dress them in tunics.(AM) 15 Anoint them just as you anointed their father, so they may serve me as priests. Their anointing will be to a priesthood that will continue throughout their generations.(AN) 16 Moses did everything just as the Lord commanded(AO) him.

17 So the tabernacle(AP) was set up on the first day of the first month(AQ) in the second year. 18 When Moses(AR) set up the tabernacle, he put the bases in place, erected the frames,(AS) inserted the crossbars and set up the posts. 19 Then he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering(AT) over the tent, as the Lord commanded(AU) him.

20 He took the tablets of the covenant law(AV) and placed them in the ark,(AW) attached the poles to the ark and put the atonement cover(AX) over it. 21 Then he brought the ark into the tabernacle and hung the shielding curtain(AY) and shielded the ark of the covenant law, as the Lord commanded(AZ) him.

22 Moses placed the table(BA) in the tent of meeting on the north side of the tabernacle outside the curtain 23 and set out the bread(BB) on it before the Lord, as the Lord commanded(BC) him.

24 He placed the lampstand(BD) in the tent of meeting opposite the table on the south side of the tabernacle 25 and set up the lamps(BE) before the Lord, as the Lord commanded(BF) him.

26 Moses placed the gold altar(BG) in the tent of meeting in front of the curtain 27 and burned fragrant incense on it, as the Lord commanded(BH) him.

28 Then he put up the curtain(BI) at the entrance to the tabernacle. 29 He set the altar(BJ) of burnt offering near the entrance to the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, and offered on it burnt offerings and grain offerings,(BK) as the Lord commanded(BL) him.

30 He placed the basin(BM) between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it for washing, 31 and Moses and Aaron and his sons used it to wash(BN) their hands and feet. 32 They washed whenever they entered the tent of meeting or approached the altar,(BO) as the Lord commanded(BP) Moses.

33 Then Moses set up the courtyard(BQ) around the tabernacle and altar and put up the curtain(BR) at the entrance to the courtyard. And so Moses finished the work.

The Glory of the Lord

34 Then the cloud(BS) covered the tent of meeting, and the glory(BT) of the Lord filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses could not enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory(BU) of the Lord filled the tabernacle.(BV)

36 In all the travels of the Israelites, whenever the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle, they would set out;(BW) 37 but if the cloud did not lift, they did not set out—until the day it lifted. 38 So the cloud(BX) of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the Israelites during all their travels.
