Further Oppression of Israel

That day Pharaoh commanded the overseers(A) of the people as well as their foremen, “Don’t continue to supply the people with straw for making bricks, as before. They must go and gather straw for themselves. But require the same quota of bricks from them as they were making before; do not reduce it. For they are slackers—that is why they are crying out,(B) ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ Impose heavier work on the men. Then they will be occupied with it and not pay attention to deceptive words.”

That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers(A) and overseers in charge of the people: “You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks;(B) let them go and gather their own straw. But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota.(C) They are lazy;(D) that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’(E) Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.”

10 Then the young men who had grown up with him told him, “This is what you should say to the people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you, make it lighter on us!’ This is what you should say to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist! 11 Now therefore, my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I, with barbed whips.’”[a]
