²⁶ And when your children^(A) ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ ²⁷ then tell them, ‘It is the Passover^(B) sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’”^(C) Then the people bowed down and worshiped.^(D)

⁸ On that day tell your son,^(A) ‘I do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ ⁹ This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand^(B) and a reminder on your forehead^(C) that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand.^(D)

¹⁴ “In days to come, when your son^(A) asks you, ‘What does this mean?’ say to him, ‘With a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.^(B)

²⁰ In the future, when your son asks you,^(A) “What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the Lord our God has commanded you?” ²¹ tell him: “We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.^{(B) 22} Before our eyes the Lord sent signs and wonders—great and terrible—on Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. ²³ But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land he promised on oath to our ancestors. ²⁴ The Lord commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the Lord our God,^(C) so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today.^(D)

²¹ He said to the Israelites, “In the future when your descendants ask their parents, ‘What do these stones mean?’^{(A) 22} tell them, ‘Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.’^(B)
