Exodus 13:19-21
Expanded Bible
19 Moses carried the bones of Joseph with him, because before Joseph died, he had made the ·Israelites [L sons of Israel; C here Joseph’s brothers, the sons of Israel (Jacob)] promise to do this [Gen. 50:22–26]. He had said, “When God ·saves [shows concern toward; visits] you, remember to carry my bones with you out of Egypt.”
20 The Israelites left Succoth and camped at Etham [C its exact location is undetermined], on the edge of the ·desert [wilderness]. 21 The Lord showed them the way; during the day he went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud, and during the night he was in a pillar of fire to give them light. In this way they could travel during the day or night.

New International Version
19 Moses took the bones of Joseph(A) with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.”[a](B)
20 After leaving Sukkoth(C) they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert.(D) 21 By day the Lord went ahead(E) of them in a pillar of cloud(F) to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.
