Exodus 14:26-28

New English Translation

²⁶The Lord said to Moses, “Extend your hand toward the sea, so that the waters may flow back^[a] on the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen!” ²⁷So Moses extended his hand toward the sea, and the sea returned to its normal state^[b] when the sun began to rise.^[c] Now the Egyptians were fleeing^[d] before it, but the Lord overthrew^[e] the Egyptians in the middle of the sea. ²⁸The water returned and covered the chariots and the horsemen and all the army of Pharaoh that was coming after the Israelites into the sea^[f]—not so much as one of them survived!^[g]

Exodus 14:26 tn The verb, “and they will return,” is here subordinated to the imperative preceding it, showing the purpose of that act.
Exodus 14:27 tn The Hebrew term לְאֵיתָנוֹ (l^eʾetano) means “to its place,” or better, “to its perennial state.” The point is that the sea here had a normal level, and now when the Egyptians were in the sea on the dry ground the water would return to that level.

²⁶Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.” ²⁷Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak the sea went back to its place.^(A) The Egyptians were fleeing toward^[a] it, and the Lord swept them into the sea.^(B) ²⁸The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea.^(C) Not one of them survived.^(D)
