The Israelites said to them, ‘It would have been better if the Lord had killed us in Egypt! There, we sat round pots with plenty of meat. We ate all the food that we wanted. But now you have brought us into this desert. We are so hungry that we will soon die!’

Then the Lord said to Moses, ‘I will cause bread to fall down from the sky for you like rain. Each day, the people must go out and pick up enough bread for that day. In this way I will test them. I will discover whether they will obey my rules. On the sixth day, they must pick up and prepare twice as much bread.’

The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt!(A) There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food(B) we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”(C)

Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven(D) for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test(E) them and see whether they will follow my instructions. On the sixth day they are to prepare what they bring in, and that is to be twice(F) as much as they gather on the other days.”
