12 But you shall set boundaries for the people all around, saying, ‘[a]Beware that you do not go up on the mountain or touch the border of it; (A)whoever touches the mountain shall certainly be put to death. 13 No hand shall touch him, but (B)he shall certainly be stoned or [b]shot through; whether animal or person, the violator shall not live.’ When the ram’s horn sounds a long blast, they shall come up to (C)the mountain.” 14 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people and consecrated the people, and they washed their garments. 15 He also said to the people, “Be ready for the third day; do not go near a woman.”

16 (D)So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were [c]thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud over the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the [d]foot of the mountain.

The Lord Visits Sinai

18 (E)Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the Lord descended upon it (F)in fire; and its smoke ascended like (G)the smoke of a furnace, and (H)the entire mountain [e]quaked violently. 19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and (I)God answered him with [f]thunder. 20 Then (J)the Lord came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain; and the Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain, and Moses went up. 21 Then the Lord spoke to Moses: “Go down, [g]warn the people, so that (K)they do not break through to the Lord to stare, and many of them [h]perish. 22 Also have the (L)priests who approach the Lord consecrate themselves, or else the Lord will break out against them.” 23 And Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai, for You [i]warned us, saying, ‘(M)Set boundaries around the mountain and consecrate it.’” 24 Then the Lord said to him, “[j]Go down and come up again, (N)you and Aaron with you; but do not let the (O)priests and the people break through to come up to the Lord, or He will break out against them.” 25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.

12 Put limits(A) for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death. 13 They are to be stoned(B) or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person or animal shall be permitted to live.’ Only when the ram’s horn(C) sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain.”(D)

14 After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes.(E) 15 Then he said to the people, “Prepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain(F) from sexual relations.”

16 On the morning of the third day there was thunder(G) and lightning, with a thick cloud(H) over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast.(I) Everyone in the camp trembled.(J) 17 Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.(K) 18 Mount Sinai was covered with smoke,(L) because the Lord descended on it in fire.(M) The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace,(N) and the whole mountain[a] trembled(O) violently. 19 As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice(P) of God answered(Q) him.[b]

20 The Lord descended to the top of Mount Sinai(R) and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up 21 and the Lord said to him, “Go down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see(S) the Lord and many of them perish.(T) 22 Even the priests, who approach(U) the Lord, must consecrate(V) themselves, or the Lord will break out against them.”(W)

23 Moses said to the Lord, “The people cannot come up Mount Sinai,(X) because you yourself warned us, ‘Put limits(Y) around the mountain and set it apart as holy.’”

24 The Lord replied, “Go down and bring Aaron(Z) up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through to come up to the Lord, or he will break out against them.”(AA)

25 So Moses went down to the people and told them.
