²^(A)When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve for six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing.

²“If you buy a Hebrew servant,^(C) he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free,^(D) without paying anything.

³⁹^(A)“If your brother becomes poor beside you and sells himself to you, you shall not make him serve as a slave:

³⁹“‘If any of your fellow Israelites become poor and sell themselves to you, do not make them work as slaves.^(A)
