Exodus 3:4-6

New International Version

⁴When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called^(A) to him from within the bush,^(B) “Moses! Moses!”

And Moses said, “Here I am.”^(C)

⁵“Do not come any closer,”^(D) God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”^(E) ⁶Then he said, “I am the God of your father,^[a] the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.”^(F) At this, Moses hid^(G) his face, because he was afraid to look at God.^(H)

The Fall of Jericho

¹³Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man^(A) standing in front of him with a drawn sword^(B) in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?”

¹⁴“Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown^(C) to the ground^(D) in reverence, and asked him, “What message does my Lord^[a] have for his servant?”

¹⁵The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy.”^(E) And Joshua did so.
