⁸ They have quickly turned aside from the way which I commanded them. ^(A)They have made for themselves a molten calf, and have worshiped it and ^(B)have sacrificed to it and said, ‘^[a](C)This is your god, O Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt!’”

¹⁵ otherwise you might make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land and they would play the harlot with their gods and ^(A)sacrifice to their gods, and someone ^(B)might invite you ^[a]to eat of his sacrifice,

^7 (A)They shall no longer sacrifice their sacrifices to the ^[a]goat demons with which they play the harlot. This shall be a permanent statute to them throughout their generations.”’

² For ^(A)they invited the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.

² “^(A)If there is found in your midst, in any of your ^[a]towns, which the Lord your God is giving you, a man or a woman who does what is evil in the sight of the Lord your God, by transgressing His covenant, ³ and has gone and ^(B)served other gods and worshiped them, ^(C)or the sun or the moon or any of the heavenly host, ^(D)which I have not commanded,

⁵ then you shall bring out that man or that woman who has done this evil deed to your gates, that is, the man or the woman, and ^(A)you shall stone them to ^[a]death.

⁴⁰ Then Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; do not let one of them escape.” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to ^(A)the brook Kishon, ^(B)and slew them there.

²⁵ Then it came about, as soon as he had finished offering the burnt offering, that Jehu said to the ^[a](A)guard and to the royal officers, “^(B)Go in, ^[b]kill them; let none come out.” And they ^[c]killed them with the edge of the sword; and the ^[d]guard and the royal officers threw them out, and went to the ^[e]inner room of the house of Baal.
