²⁷ “I will cause the people ahead of you to feel terror^[a] and will throw into confusion^(A) all the nations you come to. I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you in retreat.^[b]

²⁵ No one will be able to stand against you; the Lord your God will put fear and dread of you in all the land where you set foot, as he has promised you.^(A)

⁹ and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land^(A) and that the terror of you has fallen on us,^(B) and everyone who lives in the land is panicking because of you.^{[a](C) 10} For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt,^(D) and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two Amorite kings you completely destroyed^(E) across the Jordan. ¹¹ When we heard this, we lost heart,^(F) and everyone’s courage failed^[b] because of you,^(G) for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on earth below.^(H)

Circumcision of the Israelites

5 When all the Amorite kings across the Jordan to the west and all the Canaanite kings near the sea^(A) heard how the Lord had dried up the water of the Jordan before the Israelites until they had crossed over,^(B) they lost heart and their courage failed because of the Israelites.

³ When the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,^{(A) 4} they acted deceptively. They gathered provisions^[a] and took worn-out sacks on their donkeys and old wineskins, cracked and mended. ⁵ They wore old, patched sandals on their feet and threadbare clothing on their bodies. Their entire provision of bread was dry and crumbly. ⁶ They went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land. Please make a treaty with us.”^(B)
