14 When the peoples hear, they will shudder;
anguish will seize the inhabitants of Philistia.
15 Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified;(A)
trembling will seize the leaders of Moab;
all the inhabitants of Canaan will panic;
16 terror(B) and dread will fall on them.
They will be as still[a] as a stone
because of your powerful arm
until your people pass by, Lord,

When the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,(A) they acted deceptively. They gathered provisions[a] and took worn-out sacks on their donkeys and old wineskins, cracked and mended. They wore old, patched sandals on their feet and threadbare clothing on their bodies. Their entire provision of bread was dry and crumbly. They went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land.
