¹⁵ “Be careful not to make a treaty^(A) with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute^(B) themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices.^{(C) 16} And when you choose some of their daughters as wives^(D) for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods,^(E) they will lead your sons to do the same.

¹⁶ And the Lord said to Moses: “You are going to rest with your ancestors,^(A) and these people will soon prostitute^(B) themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake^(C) me and break the covenant I made with them.

¹⁷ At the end of seventy years,^(A) the Lord will deal with Tyre. She will return to her lucrative prostitution^(B) and will ply her trade with all the kingdoms on the face of the earth.^(C)

Unfaithful Israel

⁶ During the reign of King Josiah,^(A) the Lord said to me, “Have you seen what faithless^(B) Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every spreading tree^(C) and has committed adultery^(D) there.

⁸ I gave faithless Israel^(A) her certificate of divorce^(B) and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear;^(C) she also went out and committed adultery.

¹⁵ “‘But you trusted in your beauty and used your fame to become a prostitute. You lavished your favors on anyone who passed by^(A) and your beauty became his.^{(B) 16} You took some of your garments to make gaudy high places,^(C) where you carried on your prostitution.^(D) You went to him, and he possessed your beauty.^{[a] 17} You also took the fine jewelry I gave you, the jewelry made of my gold and silver, and you made for yourself male idols and engaged in prostitution with them.^(E)

²⁶ You engaged in prostitution^(A) with the Egyptians,^(B) your neighbors with large genitals, and aroused my anger^(C) with your increasing promiscuity.^{(D) 27} So I stretched out my hand^(E) against you and reduced your territory; I gave you over^(F) to the greed of your enemies, the daughters of the Philistines,^(G) who were shocked by your lewd conduct. ²⁸ You engaged in prostitution with the Assyrians^(H) too, because you were insatiable; and even after that, you still were not satisfied.^(I)
