² But Pharaoh responded, “Who is the Lord that I should obey him by letting Israel go?^(A) I don’t know^[a] the Lord, and besides, I will not let Israel go.”^(B)

¹⁷ As for me, I am going to harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them, and I will receive glory by means of Pharaoh, all his army, and his chariots and horsemen. ¹⁸ The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I receive glory through Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.”

¹⁸ Joshua waged war with all these kings for a long time. ¹⁹ No city made peace with the Israelites except the Hivites who inhabited Gibeon;^(A) all of them were taken in battle. ²⁰ For it was the Lord’s intention to harden their hearts,^(B) so that they would engage Israel in battle, be completely destroyed without mercy, and be annihilated, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
