²¹ and ^(A)they said to them, “The Lord look on you and judge, because you have made us stink in the sight of Pharaoh and his servants, and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”

⁴ And all Israel heard it said that Saul had defeated the garrison of the Philistines, and also that Israel had become a stench to the Philistines. And the people were called out to join Saul at Gilgal.

¹² And Achish trusted David, thinking, “He has made himself an utter stench to his people Israel; therefore he shall always be my servant.”

⁶ When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench to David, the Ammonites sent and hired the Syrians of ^(A)Beth-rehob, and ^(B)the Syrians of Zobah, 20,000 foot soldiers, and the king of ^(C)Maacah with 1,000 men, and the men of ^(D)Tob, 12,000 men.

⁶ When the Ammonites saw that they had become a stench to David, Hanun and the Ammonites sent 1,000 talents^[a] of silver to hire chariots and horsemen ^(A)from Mesopotamia, from Aram-maacah, and from ^(B)Zobah.
