Punishment for Wickedness Foretold

Moreover, the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “And you, son of man, this is what the Lord [a]God says to the land of Israel: ‘An (A)end! The end is coming on the four corners of the land. Now the end is upon you, for I will send My anger against you; I will judge you according to your ways and [b]bring all your abominations upon you. And My eye will have no pity on you, nor will I spare you, but I will [c](B)bring your ways upon you, and your abominations will be among you; then you will (C)know that I am the Lord!’

“This is what the Lord [d]God says: ‘A (D)disaster, a unique disaster, behold, it is coming! An end [e]is coming; the end has come! It has (E)awakened against you; behold, it has come! Your [f]doom has come to you, you inhabitant of the land. The (F)time has come, the (G)day is near—panic rather than joyful shouting on the mountains. Now I will shortly (H)pour out My wrath on you and expend My anger against you; I will (I)judge you according to your ways and [g]bring on you all your abominations. My eye will have no pity nor will I spare you. I will [h]repay you according to your ways, while your abominations are in your midst; then you will know that I, the Lord, am striking.

10 ‘Behold, the day! Behold, it is coming! Your [i]doom has gone forth; the (J)rod has budded, arrogance has blossomed. 11 Violence [j]has grown into a rod of (K)wickedness. None of them shall remain, none of their [k]people, none of their (L)wealth, nor anything eminent among them. 12 The (M)time has come, the day has arrived. Let neither the (N)buyer rejoice nor the seller mourn; for (O)wrath is against all their multitude. 13 Indeed, the seller will not [l](P)regain [m]what he sold as long as [n]they both live; for the vision regarding all their multitude will not [o]be averted, nor will any of them maintain his life by his wrongdoing.

14 ‘They have (Q)blown the trumpet and made everything ready, but no one is going to the battle, for My wrath is against all [p]their multitude. 15 The (R)sword is outside the city and the plague and the famine are within. Anyone who is in the field will die by the sword, while famine and the plague will consume those in the city. 16 Even when their survivors (S)escape, they will be on the mountains like (T)doves of the valleys, all of them (U)moaning, each over his own wrongdoing. 17 All (V)hands will hang limp, and all [q]knees will drip with water. 18 They will (W)put on sackcloth and (X)shuddering will overwhelm them; and shame will be on all faces, and a [r](Y)bald patch on all their heads. 19 They will (Z)fling their silver into the streets, and their gold will become an abhorrent thing; their (AA)silver and their gold will not be able to save them on the day of the wrath of the Lord. They cannot satisfy their [s]appetite, nor can they fill their stomachs, because their wrongdoing has become a cause of stumbling.

The Temple Profaned

20 Moreover, they transformed the splendor of His jewels into pride, and (AB)they made the images of their abominations and their detestable things with it; therefore I will make it an abhorrent thing to them. 21 And I will hand it over to the (AC)foreigners as plunder, and to the wicked of the earth as spoils; and they will profane it. 22 I will also turn My (AD)face away from them, and they will profane My treasure; then robbers will enter and profane it.

23 (AE)Make the [t]chain, for the land is full of [u](AF)bloody crimes, and the city is (AG)full of violence. 24 Therefore, I will bring the worst of the (AH)nations, and they will take possession of their houses. I will also put an end to the (AI)pride of the strong ones, and their (AJ)holy places will be profaned. 25 When anguish comes, they will seek (AK)peace, but there will be none. 26 (AL)Disaster will come upon disaster and (AM)rumor will be added to rumor; then they will seek a (AN)vision from a prophet, but the (AO)Law will be lost from the priest, and (AP)counsel from the elders. 27 The king will mourn, the prince will be (AQ)clothed in horror, and the hands of the people of the land will [v]tremble. I will deal with them because of their conduct, and by their judgments I will judge them. And they will know that I am the Lord.’”

Vision of Abominations in Jerusalem

Now it came about in the sixth year, on the fifth day of the sixth month, as I was sitting in my house with the elders of Judah sitting before me, that the hand of the Lord [w]God fell upon me there. Then I looked, and behold, something like the appearance of [x]a man; from His waist and downward there was the (AR)appearance of fire, and from His waist and upward like the appearance of a glow, like (AS)gleaming [y]metal. And He extended the form of a hand and took me by the hair of my head; and the (AT)Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the [z]north gate of the inner courtyard, where the seat of the idol of jealousy, which (AU)provokes to jealousy, was located. And behold, the (AV)glory of the God of Israel was there, like the appearance which I saw in the plain.

Then He said to me, “Son of man, (AW)raise your eyes now toward the north.” So I raised my eyes toward the north, and behold, to the north of the altar gate was this (AX)idol of jealousy at the entrance. And He said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing, the great (AY)abominations which the house of Israel are committing here, so that I would be far from My sanctuary? But yet you will see still greater abominations!”

Then He brought me to the entrance of the courtyard, and when I looked, behold, a hole in the wall. And He said to me, “Son of man, now (AZ)dig through the wall.” So I dug through the wall, and behold, an entrance. Then He said to me, “Go in and see the wicked abominations that they are committing here.” 10 So I entered and looked, and behold, every form of crawling things and animals and detestable things, with all the idols of the house of Israel, were carved on the wall all around. 11 And standing in front of them were (BA)seventy (BB)elders of the house of Israel, with Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan standing among them, each man with his (BC)censer in his hand; and the fragrance of the cloud of incense was rising. 12 Then He said to me, “Do you see, son of man, what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the dark, each man in the rooms of his carved images? For they say, ‘(BD)The Lord does not see us; the Lord has (BE)abandoned the land.’” 13 And He said to me, “Yet you will see still greater abominations which they are committing!”

14 Then He brought me to the entrance of the (BF)gate of the Lords house which was toward the north; and behold, women were sitting there weeping for [aa]Tammuz. 15 And He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? Yet you will see still greater abominations than these!”

16 Then He brought me into the inner courtyard of the Lords house. And behold, at the entrance to the temple of the Lord, between the porch and the altar, were about twenty-five men with their (BG)backs to the temple of the Lord while their faces were toward the east; and (BH)they were [ab]prostrating themselves eastward toward the sun. 17 And He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? Is it a trivial thing for the house of Judah to commit the abominations which they have committed here, that they have (BI)filled the land with violence and (BJ)provoked Me to anger repeatedly? Yet behold, they are [ac]putting the twig to their nose! 18 Therefore, I indeed will deal in wrath. My eye will have no pity nor will I spare; and (BK)though they cry out in My ears with a loud voice, yet I will not listen to them.”

The Vision of Slaughter

Then He cried out in my [ad]presence with a loud (BL)voice, saying, “Come forward, you [ae]executioners of the city, each with his weapon of destruction in his hand.” And behold, six men came from the direction of the upper gate which faces north, each with his smashing weapon in his hand; and among them was (BM)one man clothed in linen with a scribe’s kit at his waist. And they came in and stood beside the bronze altar.

Then the (BN)glory of the God of Israel ascended from the cherub on which it had been, to the threshold of the [af]temple. And He called to the man clothed in linen at whose waist was the scribe’s kit. And the Lord said to him, “Go through the midst of the city, through the midst of Jerusalem, and make a (BO)mark on the foreheads of the people who (BP)groan and sigh over all the abominations which are being committed in its midst.” But to the others He said in my [ag]presence, “Go through the city after him and strike; do not let your eye have pity and do not spare. [ah]Utterly (BQ)kill old men, young men, female virgins, little children, and women, but do not (BR)touch any person on whom is the mark; and you shall (BS)start from My sanctuary.” So they started with the [ai]elders who were before the [aj]temple. He also said to them, “(BT)Defile the [ak]temple and fill the courtyards with the dead. Go out!” So they went out and struck and killed the people in the city. And as they were striking the people and I alone was left, I (BU)fell on my face and cried out, [al]saying, “(BV)Oh, Lord [am]God! Are You going to destroy the entire remnant of Israel [an]by pouring out Your wrath on Jerusalem?”

Then He said to me, “The guilt of the house of Israel and Judah is very, very great, and the land is (BW)filled with blood, and the city is (BX)full of perversion; for (BY)they say, ‘The Lord has abandoned the land, and the Lord does not see!’ 10 But as for Me, (BZ)My eye will have no pity nor will I spare, but (CA)I will bring their conduct upon their heads.”

11 Then behold, the man clothed in linen, at whose waist was the scribe’s kit, [ao]reported, saying, “I have done just as You have commanded me.”

Vision of God’s Glory Departing from the Temple

10 Then I looked, and behold, in the [ap](CB)expanse that was over the heads of the cherubim something like a (CC)sapphire stone, in appearance resembling a (CD)throne, appeared above them. And He spoke to the man clothed in linen and said, “Enter between the (CE)whirling wheels under the [aq]cherubim and fill your hands with (CF)coals of fire from between the cherubim, and scatter them over the city.” And he entered in my sight.

Now the cherubim were standing on the right side of the [ar]temple when the man entered, and the cloud filled the (CG)inner courtyard. Then the (CH)glory of the Lord went up from the cherub to the threshold of the temple, and the (CI)temple was filled with the cloud, and the courtyard was filled with the (CJ)brightness of the glory of the Lord. Moreover, the sound of the wings of the cherubim was heard as far as the outer courtyard, like the (CK)voice of [as]God Almighty when He speaks.

And it came about when He commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, “Take fire from between the whirling wheels, from between the cherubim,” he entered and stood beside a wheel. Then the cherub reached out with his hand from between the cherubim to the fire which was between the cherubim, took some coals and put them into the hands of the one clothed in linen; and he took them and went out. The cherubim appeared to have something like a human hand under their wings.

Then I looked, and behold, (CL)four wheels beside the cherubim, one wheel beside each cherub; and the appearance of the wheels was like the gleam of a [at](CM)Tarshish stone. 10 And as for their appearance, all four of them had the same likeness, as if one wheel were within another wheel. 11 When they moved, they went (CN)in any of their four [au]directions without turning as they went; but they followed in the direction which [av]they faced, without turning as they went. 12 And their (CO)whole body, their backs, their hands, their wings and the (CP)wheels were [aw]covered with eyes all around, the wheels belonging to all four of them. 13 The wheels were called, [ax]as I heard, the [ay]whirling wheels. 14 And (CQ)each one had four faces. The first face was the face of a cherub, the second face was the face of a human, the third, the face of a lion, and the fourth, the face of an eagle.

15 Then the cherubim rose up. They are the (CR)living beings that I saw by the river Chebar. 16 Now when the cherubim moved, the wheels would move beside them; also when the cherubim lifted up their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels themselves would not turn away from beside them. 17 When [az]the cherubim (CS)stood still, [ba]the wheels would stand still; and when they rose up, [bb]the wheels would rise with them, because the spirit of the living beings was in them.

18 Then the glory of the Lord departed from the threshold of the temple and stood (CT)over the cherubim. 19 When (CU)the cherubim departed, they lifted their wings and rose up from the ground in my sight with the wheels beside them; and they stood still at the entrance of the east gate of the Lords house, and the glory of the God of Israel [bc]hovered over them.

20 These are the (CV)living beings that I saw beneath the God of Israel by (CW)the river Chebar; so I knew that they were cherubim. 21 (CX)Each one had four faces and each one four wings, and beneath their wings was the form of human hands. 22 As for the likeness of their faces, they were the same faces whose appearance I had seen by the river Chebar. Each one went straight ahead.

Evil Rulers to Be Judged

11 Now the (CY)Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the Lords house which faced eastward. And behold, there were twenty-five men at the entrance of the gate, and among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and (CZ)Pelatiah son of Benaiah, leaders of the people. Then He said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who devise wrongdoing and (DA)give evil advice in this city, who say, ‘The time is not near to build houses. [bd]This (DB)city is the pot and we are the meat.’ Therefore, (DC)prophesy against them, prophesy, son of man!”

Then the Spirit of the Lord fell upon me, and He said to me, “Say, ‘This is what the Lord says: “This is how you think, house of Israel, for (DD)I know [be]your (DE)thoughts. You have (DF)multiplied your slain in this city, and filled its streets with [bf]them.” Therefore, this is what the Lord [bg]God says: “Your (DG)slain whom you have laid in the midst of [bh]the city are the meat and this city is the pot; but [bi]I will (DH)bring you out of it. You have (DI)feared a sword; so I will (DJ)bring a sword upon you,” the Lord God declares. “And I will bring you out of the midst of [bj]the city, and hand you over to (DK)strangers, and (DL)execute judgments against you. 10 You will (DM)fall by the sword. I will judge you to the (DN)border of Israel; so you shall know that I am the Lord. 11 This city will (DO)not be a pot for you, nor will you be meat in the midst of it; I will judge you to the border of Israel. 12 So you will know that I am the Lord; for you have not walked in My statutes, nor have you (DP)executed My ordinances, but you have acted in accordance with the ordinances of the (DQ)nations around you.”’”

13 Now it came about, as I prophesied, that (DR)Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell on my face and cried out with a loud voice, and said, “(DS)Oh, Lord God! Will You bring the remnant of Israel to a complete destruction?”

Promise of Restoration

14 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 15 “Son of man, your brothers, your relatives, [bk]your fellow exiles, and the entire house of Israel, all of them, are those to whom the inhabitants of Jerusalem have said, ‘Keep far from the Lord; this land has been given (DT)to us as a possession.’ 16 Therefore say, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “Though I had removed them far away among the nations, and though I had scattered them among the countries, yet I was a (DU)sanctuary for them for a little while in the countries where they had gone.”’ 17 Therefore say, ‘This is what the Lord God says: “I will (DV)gather you from the peoples and assemble you from the countries among which you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.”’ 18 When they come there, they will (DW)remove all its (DX)detestable things and all its abominations from it. 19 And I will (DY)give them one heart, and put a new spirit within [bl]them. And I will remove the (DZ)heart of stone from their flesh and give them a (EA)heart of flesh, 20 so that they may (EB)walk in My statutes, and keep My ordinances and do them. Then they will be (EC)My people, and I shall be their God. 21 [bm]But as for those whose hearts go after their (ED)detestable things and abominations, I will [bn](EE)bring their conduct down on their heads,” declares the Lord God.

22 Then the cherubim (EF)lifted up their wings with the wheels beside them, and (EG)the glory of the God of Israel [bo]hovered over them. 23 The (EH)glory of the Lord went up from the midst of the city and (EI)stood over the mountain which is east of the city. 24 And the (EJ)Spirit lifted me up and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God to [bp]Chaldea, to the exiles. Then the vision that I had seen [bq](EK)left me. 25 And I (EL)told the exiles all the things that the Lord had shown me.

The End Has Come

The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says to the land of Israel:

“‘The end!(A) The end has come
upon the four corners(B) of the land!
The end is now upon you,
and I will unleash my anger against you.
I will judge you according to your conduct(C)
and repay you for all your detestable practices.(D)
I will not look on you with pity;(E)
    I will not spare you.
I will surely repay you for your conduct
and for the detestable practices among you.

“‘Then you will know that I am the Lord.’(F)

“This is what the Sovereign Lord says:

“‘Disaster!(G) Unheard-of[a] disaster!
    See, it comes!
The end(H) has come!
    The end has come!
It has roused itself against you.
    See, it comes!
Doom has come upon you,
upon you who dwell in the land.
The time has come! The day(I) is near!(J)
There is panic, not joy, on the mountains.
I am about to pour out my wrath(K) on you
and spend my anger against you.
I will judge you according to your conduct
and repay you for all your detestable practices.(L)
I will not look on you with pity;
    I will not spare you.(M)
I will repay you for your conduct
and for the detestable practices among you.(N)

10 “‘See, the day!
    See, it comes!
Doom has burst forth,
    the rod(P) has budded,
    arrogance has blossomed!

None of the people will be left,
    none of that crowd—
none of their wealth,
    nothing of value.(R)
12 The time has come!
    The day has arrived!
Let not the buyer(S) rejoice
    nor the seller grieve,
for my wrath is on the whole crowd.(T)
13 The seller will not recover
    the property that was sold—
as long as both buyer and seller live.
For the vision concerning the whole crowd
    will not be reversed.
Because of their sins, not one of them
    will preserve their life.(U)

14 “‘They have blown the trumpet,(V)
they have made all things ready,

    will flee to the mountains.
Like doves(Z) of the valleys,
    they will all moan,
    each for their own sins.(AA)
17 Every hand will go limp;(AB)
every leg will be wet with urine.(AC)
18 They will put on sackcloth(AD)

Their silver and gold
will not be able to deliver them
in the day of the Lord’s wrath.(AH)
It will not satisfy(AI) their hunger
    or fill their stomachs,
for it has caused them to stumble(AJ) into sin.(AK)
20 They took pride in their beautiful jewelry
and used it to make(AL) their detestable idols.
They made it into vile images;(AM)
therefore I will make it a thing unclean for them.(AN)
21 I will give their wealth as plunder(AO) to foreigners

    who will defile it.(AP)
22 I will turn my face(AQ) away from the people,
and robbers will desecrate the place I treasure.
They will enter it
    and will defile it.(AR)

23 “‘Prepare chains!
For the land is full of bloodshed,(AS)
and the city is full of violence.(AT)
24 I will bring the most wicked of nations
to take possession of their houses.
I will put an end to the pride of the mighty,

“‘Then they will know that I am the Lord.(BC)’”

Idolatry in the Temple

In the sixth year, in the sixth month on the fifth day, while I was sitting in my house and the elders(BD) of Judah were sitting before(BE) me, the hand of the Sovereign Lord came on me there.(BF) I looked, and I saw a figure like that of a man.[c] From what appeared to be his waist down he was like fire, and from there up his appearance was as bright as glowing metal.(BG) He stretched out what looked like a hand(BH) and took me by the hair of my head. The Spirit lifted me up(BI) between earth and heaven and in visions(BJ) of God he took me to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court,(BK) where the idol that provokes to jealousy(BL) stood. And there before me was the glory(BM) of the God of Israel, as in the vision I had seen in the plain.(BN)

Then he said to me, “Son of man, look toward the north.” So I looked, and in the entrance north of the gate of the altar I saw this idol(BO) of jealousy.

And he said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing—the utterly detestable(BP) things the Israelites are doing here, things that will drive me far from my sanctuary?(BQ) But you will see things that are even more detestable.”

Then he brought me to the entrance to the court. I looked, and I saw a hole in the wall. He said to me, “Son of man, now dig into the wall.” So I dug into the wall and saw a doorway there.

And he said to me, “Go in and see the wicked and detestable things they are doing here.” 10 So I went in and looked, and I saw portrayed all over the walls(BR) all kinds of crawling things and unclean(BS) animals and all the idols of Israel.(BT) 11 In front of them stood seventy elders(BU) of Israel, and Jaazaniah son of Shaphan was standing among them. Each had a censer(BV) in his hand, and a fragrant cloud of incense(BW) was rising.(BX)

12 He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of Israel are doing in the darkness,(BY) each at the shrine of his own idol? They say, ‘The Lord does not see(BZ) us; the Lord has forsaken the land.’” 13 Again, he said, “You will see them doing things that are even more detestable.”

14 Then he brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the Lord, and I saw women sitting there, mourning the god Tammuz.(CA) 15 He said to me, “Do you see this, son of man? You will see things that are even more detestable than this.”

16 He then brought me into the inner court(CB) of the house of the Lord, and there at the entrance to the temple, between the portico and the altar,(CC) were about twenty-five men. With their backs toward the temple of the Lord and their faces toward the east, they were bowing down to the sun(CD) in the east.(CE)

17 He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the people of Judah to do the detestable things(CF) they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence(CG) and continually arouse my anger?(CH) Look at them putting the branch to their nose! 18 Therefore I will deal with them in anger;(CI) I will not look on them with pity(CJ) or spare them. Although they shout in my ears, I will not listen(CK) to them.”

Judgment on the Idolaters

Then I heard him call out in a loud voice, “Bring near those who are appointed to execute judgment on the city, each with a weapon in his hand.” And I saw six men coming from the direction of the upper gate, which faces north, each with a deadly weapon in his hand. With them was a man clothed in linen(CL) who had a writing kit at his side. They came in and stood beside the bronze altar.

Now the glory(CM) of the God of Israel went up from above the cherubim,(CN) where it had been, and moved to the threshold of the temple. Then the Lord called to the man clothed in linen who had the writing kit at his side and said to him, “Go throughout the city of Jerusalem(CO) and put a mark(CP) on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament(CQ) over all the detestable things that are done in it.(CR)

As I listened, he said to the others, “Follow him through the city and kill, without showing pity(CS) or compassion.(CT) Slaughter(CU) the old men, the young men and women, the mothers and children,(CV) but do not touch anyone who has the mark.(CW) Begin at my sanctuary.” So they began with the old men(CX) who were in front of the temple.(CY)

Then he said to them, “Defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain.(CZ) Go!” So they went out and began killing throughout the city. While they were killing and I was left alone, I fell facedown,(DA) crying out, “Alas, Sovereign Lord!(DB) Are you going to destroy the entire remnant of Israel in this outpouring of your wrath(DC) on Jerusalem?(DD)

He answered me, “The sin of the people of Israel and Judah is exceedingly great; the land is full of bloodshed and the city is full of injustice.(DE) They say, ‘The Lord has forsaken the land; the Lord does not see.’(DF) 10 So I will not look on them with pity(DG) or spare them, but I will bring down on their own heads what they have done.(DH)

11 Then the man in linen with the writing kit at his side brought back word, saying, “I have done as you commanded.”

God’s Glory Departs From the Temple

10 I looked, and I saw the likeness of a throne(DI) of lapis lazuli(DJ) above the vault(DK) that was over the heads of the cherubim.(DL) The Lord said to the man clothed in linen,(DM) “Go in among the wheels(DN) beneath the cherubim. Fill(DO) your hands with burning coals(DP) from among the cherubim and scatter them over the city.” And as I watched, he went in.

Now the cherubim were standing on the south side of the temple when the man went in, and a cloud filled the inner court. Then the glory of the Lord(DQ) rose from above the cherubim and moved to the threshold of the temple. The cloud filled the temple, and the court was full of the radiance of the glory of the Lord. The sound of the wings of the cherubim could be heard as far away as the outer court, like the voice(DR) of God Almighty[d] when he speaks.(DS)

When the Lord commanded the man in linen, “Take fire from among the wheels,(DT) from among the cherubim,” the man went in and stood beside a wheel. Then one of the cherubim reached out his hand to the fire(DU) that was among them. He took up some of it and put it into the hands of the man in linen, who took it and went out. (Under the wings of the cherubim could be seen what looked like human hands.)(DV)

I looked, and I saw beside the cherubim four wheels, one beside each of the cherubim; the wheels sparkled like topaz.(DW) 10 As for their appearance, the four of them looked alike; each was like a wheel intersecting a wheel. 11 As they moved, they would go in any one of the four directions the cherubim faced; the wheels did not turn about[e] as the cherubim went. The cherubim went in whatever direction the head faced, without turning as they went. 12 Their entire bodies, including their backs, their hands and their wings, were completely full of eyes,(DX) as were their four wheels.(DY) 13 I heard the wheels being called “the whirling wheels.” 14 Each of the cherubim(DZ) had four faces:(EA) One face was that of a cherub, the second the face of a human being, the third the face of a lion,(EB) and the fourth the face of an eagle.(EC)

15 Then the cherubim rose upward. These were the living creatures(ED) I had seen by the Kebar River.(EE) 16 When the cherubim moved, the wheels beside them moved; and when the cherubim spread their wings to rise from the ground, the wheels did not leave their side. 17 When the cherubim stood still, they also stood still; and when the cherubim rose, they rose with them, because the spirit of the living creatures was in them.(EF)

18 Then the glory(EG) of the Lord departed from over the threshold of the temple and stopped above the cherubim.(EH) 19 While I watched, the cherubim spread their wings and rose from the ground, and as they went, the wheels went with them.(EI) They stopped at the entrance of the east gate of the Lord’s house, and the glory(EJ) of the God of Israel was above them.

20 These were the living creatures I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the Kebar River,(EK) and I realized that they were cherubim. 21 Each had four faces(EL) and four wings,(EM) and under their wings was what looked like human hands. 22 Their faces had the same appearance as those I had seen by the Kebar River.(EN) Each one went straight ahead.

God’s Sure Judgment on Jerusalem

11 Then the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the gate of the house of the Lord that faces east. There at the entrance of the gate were twenty-five men, and I saw among them Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah(EO) son of Benaiah, leaders(EP) of the people.(EQ) The Lord said to me, “Son of man, these are the men who are plotting evil(ER) and giving wicked advice in this city.(ES) They say, ‘Haven’t our houses been recently rebuilt? This city is a pot,(ET) and we are the meat in it.’(EU) Therefore prophesy(EV) against them; prophesy, son of man.”

Then the Spirit of the Lord came on me, and he told me to say: “This is what the Lord says: That is what you are saying, you leaders in Israel, but I know what is going through your mind.(EW) You have killed many people in this city and filled its streets with the dead.(EX)

“Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: The bodies you have thrown there are the meat and this city is the pot,(EY) but I will drive you out of it.(EZ) You fear the sword,(FA) and the sword is what I will bring against you, declares the Sovereign Lord.(FB) I will drive you out of the city and deliver you into the hands(FC) of foreigners and inflict punishment on you.(FD) 10 You will fall by the sword, and I will execute judgment on you at the borders of Israel.(FE) Then you will know that I am the Lord. 11 This city will not be a pot(FF) for you, nor will you be the meat in it; I will execute judgment on you at the borders of Israel. 12 And you will know that I am the Lord,(FG) for you have not followed my decrees(FH) or kept my laws but have conformed to the standards of the nations around you.(FI)

13 Now as I was prophesying, Pelatiah(FJ) son of Benaiah died. Then I fell facedown and cried out in a loud voice, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! Will you completely destroy the remnant of Israel?(FK)

The Promise of Israel’s Return

14 The word of the Lord came to me: 15 “Son of man, the people of Jerusalem have said of your fellow exiles and all the other Israelites, ‘They are far away from the Lord; this land was given to us as our possession.’(FL)

16 “Therefore say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Although I sent them far away among the nations and scattered them among the countries, yet for a little while I have been a sanctuary(FM) for them in the countries where they have gone.’

17 “Therefore say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will gather you from the nations and bring you back from the countries where you have been scattered, and I will give you back the land of Israel again.’(FN)

18 “They will return to it and remove all its vile images(FO) and detestable idols.(FP) 19 I will give them an undivided heart(FQ) and put a new spirit in them; I will remove from them their heart of stone(FR) and give them a heart of flesh.(FS) 20 Then they will follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.(FT) They will be my people,(FU) and I will be their God.(FV) 21 But as for those whose hearts are devoted to their vile images and detestable idols,(FW) I will bring down on their own heads what they have done, declares the Sovereign Lord.(FX)

22 Then the cherubim, with the wheels beside them, spread their wings, and the glory(FY) of the God of Israel was above them.(FZ) 23 The glory(GA) of the Lord went up from within the city and stopped above the mountain(GB) east of it. 24 The Spirit(GC) lifted me up and brought me to the exiles in Babylonia[f] in the vision(GD) given by the Spirit of God.

Then the vision I had seen went up from me, 25 and I told the exiles everything the Lord had shown me.(GE)
