Blessing on Israel

36 “And you, son of man, prophesy to the (A)mountains of Israel, and say, ‘O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord! Thus says the Lord God: “Because (B)the enemy has said of you, ‘Aha! (C)The [a]ancient heights (D)have become our possession,’ ” ’ therefore prophesy, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Because they made you desolate and swallowed you up on every side, so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations, (E)and you are taken up by the lips of (F)talkers and slandered by the people”— therefore, O mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God! Thus says the Lord God to the mountains, the hills, the [b]rivers, the valleys, the desolate wastes, and the cities that have been forsaken, which (G)became plunder and (H)mockery to the rest of the nations all around— therefore thus says the Lord God: (I)“Surely I have spoken in My burning jealousy against the rest of the nations and against all Edom, (J)who gave My land to themselves as a possession, with wholehearted joy and [c]spiteful minds, in order to plunder its open country.” ’

“Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and say to the mountains, the hills, the rivers, and the valleys, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I have spoken in My jealousy and My fury, because you have (K)borne the shame of the nations.” Therefore thus says the Lord God: “I have (L)raised My hand in an oath that surely the nations that are around you shall (M)bear their own shame. But you, O mountains of Israel, you shall shoot forth your branches and yield your fruit to My people Israel, for they are about to come. For indeed I am for you, and I will turn to you, and you shall be tilled and sown. 10 I will multiply men upon you, all the house of Israel, all of it; and the cities shall be inhabited and (N)the ruins rebuilt. 11 (O)I will multiply upon you man and beast; and they shall increase and [d]bear young; I will make you inhabited as in former times, and do (P)better for you than at your beginnings. (Q)Then you shall know that I am the Lord. 12 Yes, I will cause men to walk on you, My people Israel; (R)they shall take possession of you, and you shall be their inheritance; no more shall you (S)bereave them of children.

13 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Because they say to you, (T)‘You devour men and bereave your nation of children, 14 therefore you shall devour men no more, nor bereave your nation anymore,” says the Lord God. 15 (U)“Nor will I let you hear the taunts of the nations anymore, nor bear the reproach of the peoples anymore, nor shall you cause your nation to stumble anymore,” says the Lord God.’ ”

The Renewal of Israel

16 Moreover the word of the Lord came to me, saying: 17 “Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, (V)they defiled it by their own ways and deeds; to Me their way was like (W)the uncleanness of a woman in her customary impurity. 18 Therefore I poured out My fury on them (X)for the blood they had shed on the land, and for their idols with which they had defiled it. 19 So I (Y)scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed throughout the countries; I judged them (Z)according to their ways and their deeds. 20 When they came to the nations, wherever they went, they (AA)profaned My holy name—when they said of them, ‘These are the people of the Lord, and yet they have gone out of His land.’ 21 But I had concern (AB)for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations wherever they went.

22 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “I do not do this for your sake, O house of Israel, (AC)but for My holy name’s sake, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went. 23 And I will sanctify My great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst; and the nations shall know that I am the Lord,” says the Lord God, “when I am (AD)hallowed in you before their eyes. 24 For (AE)I will take you from among the nations, gather you out of all countries, and bring you into your own land. 25 (AF)Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean; I will cleanse you (AG)from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 I will give you a (AH)new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 I will put My (AI)Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will keep My judgments and do them. 28 (AJ)Then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; (AK)you shall be My people, and I will be your God. 29 I will (AL)deliver you from all your uncleannesses. (AM)I will call for the grain and multiply it, and (AN)bring no famine upon you. 30 (AO)And I will multiply the fruit of your trees and the increase of your fields, so that you need never again bear the reproach of famine among the nations. 31 Then (AP)you will remember your evil ways and your deeds that were not good; and you (AQ)will [e]loathe yourselves in your own sight, for your iniquities and your abominations. 32 (AR)Not for your sake do I do this,” says the Lord God, “let it be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel!”

33 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will also enable you to dwell in the cities, (AS)and the ruins shall be rebuilt. 34 The desolate land shall be tilled instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass by. 35 So they will say, ‘This land that was desolate has become like the garden of (AT)Eden; and the wasted, desolate, and ruined cities are now fortified and inhabited.’ 36 Then the nations which are left all around you shall know that I, the Lord, have rebuilt the ruined places and planted what was desolate. (AU)I, the Lord, have spoken it, and I will do it.

37 ‘Thus says the Lord God: (AV)“I will also let the house of Israel inquire of Me to do this for them: I will (AW)increase their men like a flock. 38 Like a [f]flock offered as holy sacrifices, like the flock at Jerusalem on its [g]feast days, so shall the ruined cities be filled with flocks of men. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.” ’ ”

The Dry Bones Live

37 The (AX)hand of the Lord came upon me and brought me out (AY)in the Spirit of the Lord, and set me down in the midst of the valley; and it was full of bones. Then He caused me to pass by them all around, and behold, there were very many in the open valley; and indeed they were very dry. And He said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”

So I answered, “O Lord God, (AZ)You know.”

Again He said to me, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them, ‘O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord! Thus says the Lord God to these bones: “Surely I will (BA)cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live. I will put sinews on you and bring flesh upon you, cover you with skin and put breath in you; and you shall live. (BB)Then you shall know that I am the Lord.” ’ ”

So I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and suddenly a rattling; and the bones came together, bone to bone. Indeed, as I looked, the sinews and the flesh came upon them, and the skin covered them over; but there was no breath in them.

Also He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the [h]breath, ‘Thus says the Lord God: (BC)“Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” ’ ” 10 So I prophesied as He commanded me, (BD)and [i]breath came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great army.

11 Then He said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the (BE)whole house of Israel. They indeed say, (BF)‘Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off!’ 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, (BG)O My people, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and (BH)bring you into the land of Israel. 13 Then you shall know that I am the Lord, when I have opened your graves, O My people, and brought you up from your graves. 14 I (BI)will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken it and performed it,” says the Lord.’ ”

One Kingdom, One King

15 Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 16 “As for you, son of man, (BJ)take a stick for yourself and write on it: ‘For Judah and for (BK)the children of Israel, his companions.’ Then take another stick and write on it, ‘For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel, his companions.’ 17 Then (BL)join them one to another for yourself into one stick, and they will become one in your hand.

18 “And when the children of your people speak to you, saying, (BM)‘Will you not show us what you mean by these?’— 19 (BN)say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Surely I will take (BO)the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel, his companions; and I will join them with it, with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they will be one in My hand.” ’ 20 And the sticks on which you write will be in your hand (BP)before their eyes.

21 “Then say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Surely (BQ)I will take the children of Israel from among the nations, wherever they have gone, and will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land; 22 and (BR)I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel; and (BS)one king shall be king over them all; they shall no longer be two nations, nor shall they ever be divided into two kingdoms again. 23 (BT)They shall not defile themselves anymore with their idols, nor with their detestable things, nor with any of their transgressions; but (BU)I will deliver them from all their dwelling places in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them. Then they shall be My people, and I will be their God.

24 (BV)“David My servant shall be king over them, and (BW)they shall all have one shepherd; (BX)they shall also walk in My judgments and observe My statutes, and do them. 25 (BY)Then they shall dwell in the land that I have given to Jacob My servant, where your fathers dwelt; and they shall dwell there, they, their children, and their children’s children, (BZ)forever; and (CA)My servant David shall be their prince forever. 26 Moreover I will [j]make (CB)a covenant of peace with them, and it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; I will establish them and (CC)multiply them, and I will set My (CD)sanctuary in their midst forevermore. 27 (CE)My tabernacle also shall be with them; indeed I will be (CF)their God, and they shall be My people. 28 (CG)The nations also will know that I, the Lord, (CH)sanctify Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forevermore.” ’ ”

Gog and Allies Attack Israel

38 Now the word of the Lord came to me, saying, (CI)“Son of man, (CJ)set your face against (CK)Gog, of the land of (CL)Magog, [k]the prince of Rosh, (CM)Meshech, and Tubal, and prophesy against him, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I am against you, O Gog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal. (CN)I will turn you around, put hooks into your jaws, and (CO)lead you out, with all your army, horses, and horsemen, (CP)all splendidly clothed, a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords. Persia, [l]Ethiopia, and [m]Libya are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; (CQ)Gomer and all its troops; the house of (CR)Togarmah from the far north and all its troops—many people are with you.

(CS)“Prepare yourself and be ready, you and all your companies that are gathered about you; and be a guard for them. (CT)After many days (CU)you will be visited. In the latter years you will come into the land of those brought back from the sword (CV)and gathered from many people on (CW)the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate; they were brought out of the nations, and now all of them (CX)dwell safely. You will ascend, coming (CY)like a storm, covering the (CZ)land like a cloud, you and all your troops and many peoples with you.”

10 ‘Thus says the Lord God: “On that day it shall come to pass that thoughts will arise in your mind, and you will make an evil plan: 11 You will say, ‘I will go up against a land of (DA)unwalled villages; I will (DB)go to a peaceful people, (DC)who dwell [n]safely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates’— 12 to take plunder and to take booty, to stretch out your hand against the waste places that are again inhabited, (DD)and against a people gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and goods, who dwell in the midst of the land. 13 (DE)Sheba, (DF)Dedan, the merchants (DG)of Tarshish, and all (DH)their young lions will say to you, ‘Have you come to take plunder? Have you gathered your army to take booty, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take great plunder?’ ” ’

14 “Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog, ‘Thus says the Lord God: (DI)“On that day when My people Israel (DJ)dwell safely, will you not know it? 15 (DK)Then you will come from your place out of the far north, you and many peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great company and a mighty army. 16 You will come up against My people Israel like a cloud, to cover the land. It will be in the latter days that I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may (DL)know Me, when I am (DM)hallowed in you, O Gog, before their eyes.” 17 Thus says the Lord God: “Are you he of whom I have spoken in former days by My servants the prophets of Israel, who prophesied for years in those days that I would bring you against them?

Judgment on Gog

18 “And it will come to pass at the same time, when Gog comes against the land of Israel,” says the Lord God, “that My fury will show in My face. 19 For (DN)in My jealousy (DO)and in the fire of My wrath I have spoken: (DP)‘Surely in that day there shall be a great [o]earthquake in the land of Israel, 20 so that (DQ)the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that creep on the earth, and all men who are on the face of the earth shall shake at My presence. (DR)The mountains shall be thrown down, the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.’ 21 I will (DS)call for (DT)a sword against Gog throughout all My mountains,” says the Lord God. (DU)“Every man’s sword will be against his brother. 22 And I will (DV)bring him to judgment with (DW)pestilence and bloodshed; (DX)I will rain down on him, on his troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, flooding rain, (DY)great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. 23 Thus I will magnify Myself and (DZ)sanctify Myself, (EA)and I will be known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I am the Lord.” ’

Gog’s Armies Destroyed

39 “And (EB)you, son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I am against you, O Gog, [p]the prince of Rosh, Meshech, and Tubal; and I will (EC)turn you around and lead you on, (ED)bringing you up from the far north, and bring you against the mountains of Israel. Then I will knock the bow out of your left hand, and cause the arrows to fall out of your right hand. (EE)You shall [q]fall upon the mountains of Israel, you and all your troops and the peoples who are with you; (EF)I will give you to birds of prey of every sort and to the beasts of the field to be devoured. You shall [r]fall on [s]the open field; for I have spoken,” says the Lord God. (EG)“And I will send fire on Magog and on those who live [t]in security in (EH)the coastlands. Then they shall know that I am the Lord. (EI)So I will make My holy name known in the midst of My people Israel, and I will not let them (EJ)profane My holy name anymore. (EK)Then the nations shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. (EL)Surely it is coming, and it shall be done,” says the Lord God. “This is the day (EM)of which I have spoken.

“Then those who dwell in the cities of Israel will go out and set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and bucklers, the bows and arrows, the [u]javelins and spears; and they will make fires with them for seven years. 10 They will not take wood from the field nor cut down any from the forests, because they will make fires with the weapons; (EN)and they will plunder those who plundered them, and pillage those who pillaged them,” says the Lord God.

The Burial of Gog

11 “It will come to pass in that day that I will give Gog a burial place there in Israel, the valley of those who pass by east of the sea; and it will obstruct travelers, because there they will bury Gog and all his multitude. Therefore they will call it the Valley of [v]Hamon Gog. 12 For seven months the house of Israel will be burying them, (EO)in order to cleanse the land. 13 Indeed all the people of the land will be burying, and they will gain (EP)renown for it on the day that (EQ)I am glorified,” says the Lord God. 14 “They will set apart men regularly employed, with the help of [w]a search party, to pass through the land and bury those bodies remaining on the ground, in order (ER)to cleanse it. At the end of seven months they will make a search. 15 The search party will pass through the land; and when anyone sees a man’s bone, he shall [x]set up a marker by it, till the buriers have buried it in the Valley of Hamon Gog. 16 The name of the city will also be [y]Hamonah. Thus they shall (ES)cleanse the land.” ’

A Triumphant Festival

17 “And as for you, son of man, thus says the Lord God, (ET)‘Speak to every sort of bird and to every beast of the field:

(EU)“Assemble yourselves and come;
Gather together from all sides to My (EV)sacrificial meal
Which I am sacrificing for you,
A great sacrificial meal (EW)on the mountains of Israel,
That you may eat flesh and drink blood.
18 (EX)You shall eat the flesh of the mighty,
Drink the blood of the princes of the earth,
Of rams and lambs,
Of goats and bulls,
All of them (EY)fatlings of Bashan.
19 You shall eat fat till you are full,
And drink blood till you are drunk,
At My sacrificial meal
Which I am sacrificing for you.
20 (EZ)You shall be filled at My table
With horses and riders,
(FA)With mighty men
And with all the men of war,” says the Lord God.

Israel Restored to the Land

21 (FB)“I will set My glory among the nations; all the nations shall see My judgment which I have executed, and (FC)My hand which I have laid on them. 22 (FD)So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day forward. 23 (FE)The Gentiles shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity; because they were unfaithful to Me, therefore (FF)I hid My face from them. I (FG)gave them into the hand of their enemies, and they all fell by the sword. 24 (FH)According to their uncleanness and according to their transgressions I have dealt with them, and hidden My face from them.” ’

25 “Therefore thus says the Lord God: (FI)‘Now I will bring back the captives of Jacob, and have mercy on the (FJ)whole house of Israel; and I will be jealous for My holy name— 26 (FK)after they have borne their shame, and all their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, when they (FL)dwelt safely in their own land and no one made them afraid. 27 (FM)When I have brought them back from the peoples and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and I (FN)am hallowed in them in the sight of many nations, 28 (FO)then they shall know that I am the Lord their God, who sent them into captivity among the nations, but also brought them back to their land, and left none of them [z]captive any longer. 29 (FP)And I will not hide My face from them anymore; for I shall have (FQ)poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel,’ says the Lord God.”

Hope for the Mountains of Israel

36 “Son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel(A) and say, ‘Mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord. This is what the Sovereign Lord says:(B) The enemy said of you, “Aha!(C) The ancient heights(D) have become our possession.(E)”’ Therefore prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because they ravaged(F) and crushed you from every side so that you became the possession of the rest of the nations and the object of people’s malicious talk and slander,(G) therefore, mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Sovereign Lord: This is what the Sovereign Lord says to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys,(H) to the desolate ruins(I) and the deserted(J) towns that have been plundered and ridiculed(K) by the rest of the nations around you(L) this is what the Sovereign Lord says: In my burning(M) zeal I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, for with glee and with malice in their hearts they made my land their own possession so that they might plunder its pastureland.’(N) Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel and say to the mountains and hills, to the ravines and valleys: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I speak in my jealous wrath because you have suffered the scorn of the nations.(O) Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I swear with uplifted hand(P) that the nations around you will also suffer scorn.(Q)

“‘But you, mountains of Israel, will produce branches and fruit(R) for my people Israel, for they will soon come home. I am concerned for you and will look on you with favor; you will be plowed and sown,(S) 10 and I will cause many people to live on you—yes, all of Israel. The towns will be inhabited and the ruins(T) rebuilt.(U) 11 I will increase the number of people and animals living on you, and they will be fruitful(V) and become numerous. I will settle people(W) on you as in the past(X) and will make you prosper more than before.(Y) Then you will know that I am the Lord. 12 I will cause people, my people Israel, to live on you. They will possess you, and you will be their inheritance;(Z) you will never again deprive them of their children.

13 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because some say to you, “You devour people(AA) and deprive your nation of its children,” 14 therefore you will no longer devour people or make your nation childless, declares the Sovereign Lord. 15 No longer will I make you hear the taunts of the nations, and no longer will you suffer the scorn of the peoples or cause your nation to fall, declares the Sovereign Lord.(AB)’”

Israel’s Restoration Assured

16 Again the word of the Lord came to me: 17 “Son of man, when the people of Israel were living in their own land, they defiled it by their conduct and their actions. Their conduct was like a woman’s monthly uncleanness(AC) in my sight.(AD) 18 So I poured out(AE) my wrath on them because they had shed blood in the land and because they had defiled it with their idols. 19 I dispersed them among the nations, and they were scattered(AF) through the countries; I judged them according to their conduct and their actions.(AG) 20 And wherever they went among the nations they profaned(AH) my holy name, for it was said of them, ‘These are the Lord’s people, and yet they had to leave his land.’(AI) 21 I had concern for my holy name, which the people of Israel profaned among the nations where they had gone.(AJ)

22 “Therefore say to the Israelites, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake, people of Israel, that I am going to do these things, but for the sake of my holy name,(AK) which you have profaned(AL) among the nations where you have gone.(AM) 23 I will show the holiness of my great name,(AN) which has been profaned(AO) among the nations, the name you have profaned among them. Then the nations will know that I am the Lord,(AP) declares the Sovereign Lord, when I am proved holy(AQ) through you before their eyes.(AR)

24 “‘For I will take you out of the nations; I will gather you from all the countries and bring you back into your own land.(AS) 25 I will sprinkle(AT) clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse(AU) you from all your impurities(AV) and from all your idols.(AW) 26 I will give you a new heart(AX) and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone(AY) and give you a heart of flesh.(AZ) 27 And I will put my Spirit(BA) in you and move you to follow my decrees(BB) and be careful to keep my laws.(BC) 28 Then you will live in the land I gave your ancestors; you will be my people,(BD) and I will be your God.(BE) 29 I will save you from all your uncleanness. I will call for the grain and make it plentiful and will not bring famine(BF) upon you. 30 I will increase the fruit of the trees and the crops of the field, so that you will no longer suffer disgrace among the nations because of famine.(BG) 31 Then you will remember your evil ways and wicked deeds, and you will loathe yourselves for your sins and detestable practices.(BH) 32 I want you to know that I am not doing this for your sake, declares the Sovereign Lord. Be ashamed(BI) and disgraced for your conduct, people of Israel!(BJ)

33 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On the day I cleanse(BK) you from all your sins, I will resettle your towns, and the ruins(BL) will be rebuilt.(BM) 34 The desolate land will be cultivated instead of lying desolate in the sight of all who pass through it. 35 They will say, “This land that was laid waste has become like the garden of Eden;(BN) the cities that were lying in ruins, desolate and destroyed, are now fortified and inhabited.(BO) 36 Then the nations around you that remain will know that I the Lord have rebuilt what was destroyed and have replanted what was desolate. I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.’(BP)

37 “This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Once again I will yield to Israel’s plea(BQ) and do this for them: I will make their people as numerous as sheep,(BR) 38 as numerous as the flocks for offerings(BS) at Jerusalem during her appointed festivals. So will the ruined cities be filled with flocks of people. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(BT)

The Valley of Dry Bones

37 The hand of the Lord was on me,(BU) and he brought me out by the Spirit(BV) of the Lord and set me in the middle of a valley;(BW) it was full of bones.(BX) He led me back and forth among them, and I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?”

I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know.(BY)

Then he said to me, “Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!(BZ) This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath[a] enter you, and you will come to life.(CA) I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.(CB)’”

So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.

Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath;(CC) prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds(CD) and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’” 10 So I prophesied as he commanded(CE) me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army.(CF)

11 Then he said to me: “Son of man, these bones are the people of Israel. They say, ‘Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.’(CG) 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: My people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel.(CH) 13 Then you, my people, will know that I am the Lord,(CI) when I open your graves and bring you up from them.(CJ) 14 I will put my Spirit(CK) in you and you will live, and I will settle(CL) you in your own land. Then you will know that I the Lord have spoken, and I have done it, declares the Lord.(CM)’”

One Nation Under One King

15 The word of the Lord came to me: 16 “Son of man, take a stick of wood and write on it, ‘Belonging to Judah and the Israelites(CN) associated with him.(CO)’ Then take another stick of wood, and write on it, ‘Belonging to Joseph (that is, to Ephraim) and all the Israelites associated with him.’ 17 Join them together into one stick so that they will become one in your hand.(CP)

18 “When your people ask you, ‘Won’t you tell us what you mean by this?’(CQ) 19 say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am going to take the stick of Joseph—which is in Ephraim’s hand—and of the Israelite tribes associated with him, and join it to Judah’s stick. I will make them into a single stick of wood, and they will become one in my hand.’(CR) 20 Hold before their eyes the sticks you have written on 21 and say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land.(CS) 22 I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel.(CT) There will be one king over all of them and they will never again be two nations or be divided into two kingdoms.(CU) 23 They will no longer defile(CV) themselves with their idols and vile images or with any of their offenses, for I will save them from all their sinful backsliding,[b](CW) and I will cleanse them. They will be my people, and I will be their God.(CX)

24 “‘My servant David(CY) will be king(CZ) over them, and they will all have one shepherd.(DA) They will follow my laws and be careful to keep my decrees.(DB) 25 They will live in the land I gave to my servant Jacob, the land where your ancestors lived.(DC) They and their children and their children’s children will live there forever,(DD) and David my servant will be their prince forever.(DE) 26 I will make a covenant of peace(DF) with them; it will be an everlasting covenant.(DG) I will establish them and increase their numbers,(DH) and I will put my sanctuary among them(DI) forever.(DJ) 27 My dwelling place(DK) will be with them; I will be their God, and they will be my people.(DL) 28 Then the nations will know that I the Lord make Israel holy,(DM) when my sanctuary is among them forever.(DN)’”

The Lord’s Great Victory Over the Nations

38 The word of the Lord came to me: “Son of man, set your face against Gog,(DO) of the land of Magog,(DP) the chief prince of[c] Meshek and Tubal;(DQ) prophesy against him and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of[d] Meshek and Tubal.(DR) I will turn you around, put hooks(DS) in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army—your horses, your horsemen fully armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords.(DT) Persia, Cush[e](DU) and Put(DV) will be with them, all with shields and helmets, also Gomer(DW) with all its troops, and Beth Togarmah(DX) from the far north(DY) with all its troops—the many nations with you.

“‘Get ready; be prepared,(DZ) you and all the hordes gathered about you, and take command of them. After many days(EA) you will be called to arms. In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations(EB) to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and now all of them live in safety.(EC) You and all your troops and the many nations with you will go up, advancing like a storm;(ED) you will be like a cloud(EE) covering the land.(EF)

10 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: On that day thoughts will come into your mind(EG) and you will devise an evil scheme.(EH) 11 You will say, “I will invade a land of unwalled villages; I will attack a peaceful and unsuspecting people(EI)—all of them living without walls and without gates and bars.(EJ) 12 I will plunder and loot and turn my hand against the resettled ruins and the people gathered from the nations, rich in livestock and goods, living at the center of the land.[f] 13 Sheba(EK) and Dedan(EL) and the merchants of Tarshish(EM) and all her villages[g] will say to you, “Have you come to plunder? Have you gathered your hordes to loot, to carry off silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods and to seize much plunder?(EN)”’

14 “Therefore, son of man, prophesy and say to Gog: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: In that day, when my people Israel are living in safety,(EO) will you not take notice of it? 15 You will come from your place in the far north,(EP) you and many nations with you, all of them riding on horses, a great horde, a mighty army.(EQ) 16 You will advance against my people Israel like a cloud(ER) that covers the land.(ES) In days to come, Gog, I will bring you against my land, so that the nations may know me when I am proved holy(ET) through you before their eyes.(EU)

17 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You are the one I spoke of in former days by my servants the prophets of Israel. At that time they prophesied for years that I would bring you against them. 18 This is what will happen in that day: When Gog attacks the land of Israel, my hot anger will be aroused, declares the Sovereign Lord. 19 In my zeal and fiery wrath I declare that at that time there shall be a great earthquake(EV) in the land of Israel.(EW) 20 The fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble(EX) at my presence. The mountains will be overturned,(EY) the cliffs will crumble(EZ) and every wall will fall to the ground.(FA) 21 I will summon a sword(FB) against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Sovereign Lord. Every man’s sword will be against his brother.(FC) 22 I will execute judgment(FD) on him with plague and bloodshed;(FE) I will pour down torrents of rain, hailstones(FF) and burning sulfur(FG) on him and on his troops and on the many nations with him.(FH) 23 And so I will show my greatness and my holiness, and I will make myself known in the sight of many nations. Then they will know that I am the Lord.(FI)

39 “Son of man, prophesy against Gog(FJ) and say: ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: I am against you, Gog, chief prince of[h] Meshek(FK) and Tubal.(FL) I will turn you around and drag you along. I will bring you from the far north(FM) and send you against the mountains of Israel.(FN) Then I will strike your bow(FO) from your left hand and make your arrows(FP) drop from your right hand. On the mountains of Israel you will fall, you and all your troops and the nations with you. I will give you as food to all kinds of carrion birds(FQ) and to the wild animals.(FR) You will fall in the open field, for I have spoken, declares the Sovereign Lord.(FS) I will send fire(FT) on Magog(FU) and on those who live in safety in the coastlands,(FV) and they will know(FW) that I am the Lord.

“‘I will make known my holy name among my people Israel. I will no longer let my holy name be profaned,(FX) and the nations will know(FY) that I the Lord am the Holy One in Israel.(FZ) It is coming! It will surely take place, declares the Sovereign Lord. This is the day(GA) I have spoken of.

“‘Then those who live in the towns of Israel will go out and use the weapons for fuel and burn them up—the small and large shields, the bows and arrows,(GB) the war clubs and spears. For seven years they will use them for fuel.(GC) 10 They will not need to gather wood from the fields or cut it from the forests, because they will use the weapons for fuel. And they will plunder(GD) those who plundered them and loot those who looted them, declares the Sovereign Lord.(GE)

11 “‘On that day I will give Gog a burial place in Israel, in the valley of those who travel east of the Sea. It will block the way of travelers, because Gog and all his hordes will be buried(GF) there. So it will be called the Valley of Hamon Gog.[i](GG)

12 “‘For seven months the Israelites will be burying them in order to cleanse the land.(GH) 13 All the people of the land will bury them, and the day I display my glory(GI) will be a memorable day for them, declares the Sovereign Lord. 14 People will be continually employed in cleansing the land. They will spread out across the land and, along with others, they will bury any bodies that are lying on the ground.

“‘After the seven months they will carry out a more detailed search. 15 As they go through the land, anyone who sees a human bone will leave a marker beside it until the gravediggers bury it in the Valley of Hamon Gog, 16 near a town called Hamonah.[j] And so they will cleanse the land.’

17 “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Call out to every kind of bird(GJ) and all the wild animals: ‘Assemble and come together from all around to the sacrifice I am preparing for you, the great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel. There you will eat flesh and drink blood.(GK) 18 You will eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth as if they were rams and lambs, goats and bulls—all of them fattened animals from Bashan.(GL) 19 At the sacrifice(GM) I am preparing for you, you will eat fat till you are glutted and drink blood till you are drunk. 20 At my table you will eat your fill of horses and riders, mighty men and soldiers of every kind,’ declares the Sovereign Lord.(GN)

21 “I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the punishment I inflict and the hand I lay on them.(GO) 22 From that day forward the people of Israel will know that I am the Lord their God. 23 And the nations will know that the people of Israel went into exile for their sin, because they were unfaithful to me. So I hid my face from them and handed them over to their enemies, and they all fell by the sword.(GP) 24 I dealt with them according to their uncleanness and their offenses, and I hid my face from them.(GQ)

25 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: I will now restore the fortunes of Jacob[k](GR) and will have compassion(GS) on all the people of Israel, and I will be zealous for my holy name.(GT) 26 They will forget their shame and all the unfaithfulness they showed toward me when they lived in safety(GU) in their land with no one to make them afraid.(GV) 27 When I have brought them back from the nations and have gathered them from the countries of their enemies, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of many nations.(GW) 28 Then they will know that I am the Lord their God, for though I sent them into exile among the nations, I will gather them(GX) to their own land, not leaving any behind.(GY) 29 I will no longer hide my face(GZ) from them, for I will pour out my Spirit(HA) on the people of Israel, declares the Sovereign Lord.(HB)
