Ezekiel 21:28-32

New International Version

²⁸“And you, son of man, prophesy and say, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says about the Ammonites^(A) and their insults:

“‘A sword,^(B) a sword,
    drawn for the slaughter,
polished to consume
    and to flash like lightning!
²⁹Despite false visions concerning you
    and lying divinations^(C) about you,
it will be laid on the necks
    of the wicked who are to be slain,
whose day has come,
    whose time of punishment has reached its climax.^(D)

³⁰“‘Let the sword return to its sheath.^(E)
    In the place where you were created,
in the land of your ancestry,^(F)
    I will judge you.
³¹I will pour out my wrath on you
    and breathe^(G) out my fiery anger^(H) against you;
I will deliver you into the hands of brutal men,
    men skilled in destruction.^(I)
³²You will be fuel for the fire,^(J)
    your blood will be shed in your land,
you will be remembered^(K) no more;
    for I the Lord have spoken.’”

Jeremiah 25:1-7

Seventy Years of Captivity

25 The word came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim^(A) son of Josiah king of Judah, which was the first year of Nebuchadnezzar^(B) king of Babylon. ²So Jeremiah the prophet said to all the people of Judah^(C) and to all those living in Jerusalem: ³For twenty-three years—from the thirteenth year of Josiah^(D) son of Amon king of Judah until this very day—the word of the Lord has come to me and I have spoken to you again and again,^(E) but you have not listened.^(F)

⁴And though the Lord has sent all his servants the prophets^(G) to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention.^(H) ⁵They said, “Turn^(I) now, each of you, from your evil ways and your evil practices, and you can stay in the land^(J) the Lord gave to you and your ancestors for ever and ever. ⁶Do not follow other gods^(K) to serve and worship them; do not arouse my anger with what your hands have made. Then I will not harm you.”

⁷“But you did not listen to me,” declares the Lord, “and you have aroused^(L) my anger with what your hands have made,^(M) and you have brought harm^(N) to yourselves.”

“For three sins of Ammon,^(A)
    even for four, I will not relent.
Because he ripped open the pregnant women^(B) of Gilead
    in order to extend his borders,
¹⁴I will set fire to the walls of Rabbah^(C)
    that will consume^(D) her fortresses
amid war cries^(E) on the day of battle,
    amid violent winds^(F) on a stormy day.
¹⁵Her king^[a] will go into exile,
    he and his officials together,^(G)”

Moab and Ammon

⁸“I have heard the insults^(A) of Moab^(B)
    and the taunts of the Ammonites,^(C)
who insulted^(D) my people
    and made threats against their land.^(E)
⁹Therefore, as surely as I live,”
    declares the Lord Almighty,
    the God of Israel,
“surely Moab^(F) will become like Sodom,^(G)
    the Ammonites^(H) like Gomorrah—
a place of weeds and salt pits,
    a wasteland forever.
The remnant of my people will plunder^(I) them;
    the survivors^(J) of my nation will inherit their land.^(K)”

¹⁰This is what they will get in return for their pride,^(L)
    for insulting^(M) and mocking
    the people of the Lord Almighty.^(N)
¹¹The Lord will be awesome^(O) to them
    when he destroys all the gods^(P) of the earth.^(Q)
Distant nations will bow down to him,^(R)
    all of them in their own lands.
