Pharaoh to Be Slain

31 (A)In the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: (B)“Son of man, say to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to (C)his multitude:

(D)“Whom are you like in your greatness?
    Behold, (E)Assyria was a (F)cedar in (G)Lebanon,
with beautiful branches and (H)forest shade,
    (I)and of towering height,
    its top among the clouds.[a]
The waters nourished it;
    the deep made it grow tall,
making (J)its rivers flow
    around the place of its planting,
sending forth its streams
    to all the trees of the field.
So (K)it towered high
    above all the trees of the field;
its boughs grew large
    and its branches long
    from (L)abundant water in its shoots.
(M)All the birds of the heavens
    made their nests in its boughs;
under its branches all the beasts of the field
    gave birth to their young,
and under its shadow
    lived all great nations.
It was (N)beautiful in its greatness,
    in the length of its branches;
(O)for its roots went down
    to abundant waters.
(P)The cedars (Q)in the garden of God could not rival it,
    nor the fir trees equal its boughs;
neither were the plane trees
    like its branches;
no tree (R)in the garden of God
    was its equal in beauty.
I made it beautiful
    in the mass of its branches,
and all the trees of (S)Eden envied it,
    that were in the garden of God.

10 “Therefore thus says the Lord God: Because (T)it[b] towered high and set its top among the clouds,[c] and (U)its heart was proud of its height, 11 I will give it into the hand of a mighty one of the nations. He shall surely deal with it as its wickedness deserves. I have cast it out. 12 (V)Foreigners, (W)the most ruthless of nations, have cut it down and left it. (X)On the mountains and in all the valleys its branches have fallen, and its boughs have been broken in all (Y)the ravines of the land, and (Z)all the peoples of the earth have gone away from its shadow and left it. 13 (AA)On its fallen trunk dwell all the birds of the heavens, and on its branches are all the beasts of the field. 14 (AB)All this is in order that no trees by the waters may grow to towering height or set their tops among the clouds,[d] and that no trees that drink water may reach up to them in height. For they are all given over to death, (AC)to the world (AD)below, among the children of man,[e] with those who go down to the pit.

15 “Thus says the Lord God: On the day (AE)the cedar[f] went down to Sheol I caused mourning; I closed the deep over it, and restrained its rivers, and many waters were stopped. I clothed Lebanon in gloom for it, and all the trees of the field fainted because of it. 16 (AF)I made the nations quake at the sound of its fall, (AG)when I cast it down to Sheol with those who go down to the pit. (AH)And all the trees of Eden, the choice and best of Lebanon, all that drink water, (AI)were comforted in the world below. 17 They also went down to Sheol with it, (AJ)to those who are slain by the sword; yes, (AK)those who were its arm, (AL)who lived under its shadow among the nations.

18 (AM)“Whom are you thus like in glory and in greatness (AN)among the trees of Eden? (AO)You shall be brought down with (AP)the trees of Eden to the world below. (AQ)You shall lie among the uncircumcised, (AR)with those who are slain by the sword.

(AS)“This is Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.”

A Lament over Pharaoh and Egypt

32 (AT)In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: (AU)“Son of man, (AV)raise a lamentation over (AW)Pharaoh king of Egypt and say to him:

“You consider yourself (AX)a lion of the nations,
    but you are like (AY)a dragon (AZ)in the seas;
(BA)you burst forth in your rivers,
    trouble the waters with your feet,
    and foul their rivers.
Thus says the Lord God:
    (BB)I will throw my net over you
    with a host of (BC)many peoples,
    and (BD)they will haul you up in my dragnet.
And (BE)I will cast you on the ground;
    on the open field I will fling you,
and will cause all the birds of the heavens to settle on you,
    and I will gorge the beasts of the whole earth with you.
I will strew your flesh (BF)upon the mountains
    and fill the valleys with your carcass.[g]
I will drench the land even to the mountains
    with your flowing blood,
    and the ravines will be full of you.
(BG)When I blot you out, (BH)I will cover the heavens
    and make their stars dark;
I will cover the sun with a cloud,
    and the moon shall not give its light.
All the bright lights of heaven
    will I make dark over you,
    and (BI)put darkness on your land,
declares the Lord God.

“I will trouble the hearts of many peoples, when I bring your destruction among the nations, into the countries that you have not known. 10 (BJ)I will make many peoples appalled at you, and the hair of their kings shall bristle with horror because of you, when (BK)I brandish my sword before them. (BL)They shall tremble every moment, every one for his own life, on the day of your downfall.

11 “For thus says the Lord God: (BM)The sword of the king of Babylon shall come upon you. 12 I will cause (BN)your multitude to fall by the swords of mighty ones, all of them (BO)most ruthless of nations.

(BP)“They shall bring to ruin the pride of Egypt,
    and all its multitude[h] shall perish.
13 I will destroy all its beasts
    from beside many waters;
(BQ)and no foot of man shall trouble them anymore,
    nor shall the hoofs of beasts trouble them.
14 Then (BR)I will make their waters clear,
    and cause their rivers to run like oil,
declares the Lord God.
15 When I make the land of Egypt desolate,
    and when the land (BS)is desolate of all that fills it,
when I strike down all who dwell in it,
    then (BT)they will know that I am the Lord.

16 (BU)This is a lamentation that shall be chanted; the daughters of the nations shall chant it; over Egypt, and over (BV)all her multitude, shall they chant it, declares the Lord God.”

17 (BW)In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month,[i] on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the Lord came to me: 18 (BX)“Son of man, (BY)wail over (BZ)the multitude of Egypt, and (CA)send them down, her and the daughters of majestic nations, (CB)to the world below, to those who have gone down to the pit:

19 (CC)‘Whom do you surpass in beauty?
    Go down and (CD)be laid to rest with the uncircumcised.’

20 They shall fall amid those (CE)who are slain by the sword. Egypt[j] is delivered to the sword; drag her away, and (CF)all her multitudes. 21 The mighty chiefs (CG)shall speak of them, (CH)with their helpers, out of the midst of Sheol: ‘They have come down, they lie still, (CI)the uncircumcised, (CJ)slain by the sword.’

22 (CK)“Assyria is there, and all her company, (CL)its graves all around it, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, 23 whose graves are set in (CM)the uttermost parts of the pit; and her company is all around her grave, all of them slain, fallen by the sword, (CN)who spread terror (CO)in the land of the living.

24 (CP)“Elam is (CQ)there, and all her multitude around her grave; all of them (CR)slain, fallen by the sword, who went down uncircumcised into (CS)the world below, who spread their terror in the land of the living; and (CT)they bear their shame (CU)with those who go down to the pit. 25 (CV)They have made her a bed among the slain with all her multitude, (CW)her graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for terror of them was spread in the land of the living, and they bear their shame with those who go down to the pit; they are placed among the slain.

26 (CX)“Meshech-Tubal is (CY)there, and all her multitude, (CZ)her graves all around it, all of them uncircumcised, slain by the sword; for they spread their terror in the land of the living. 27 And (DA)they do not lie with the mighty, the fallen from among the uncircumcised, who went down to Sheol with their weapons of war, whose swords were laid under their heads, and whose iniquities are upon their bones; for the terror of the mighty men was in the land of the living. 28 But as for you, you shall be broken (DB)and lie among the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword.

29 (DC)“Edom is (DD)there, her kings and all her princes, who for all their might are laid with those who are killed by the sword; they lie with the uncircumcised, with those who go down to the pit.

30 “The princes (DE)of the north are there, all of them, and all the (DF)Sidonians, who have gone down in shame with the slain, (DG)for all the terror that they caused by their might; they lie uncircumcised with those who are slain by the sword, and (DH)bear their shame with those who go down to the pit.

31 “When Pharaoh sees them, he (DI)will be comforted for (DJ)all his multitude, Pharaoh and all his army, slain by the sword, declares the Lord God. 32 (DK)For I spread terror (DL)in the land of the living; and he shall be laid to rest among (DM)the uncircumcised, with those who are slain by the sword, Pharaoh and all his multitude, declares the Lord God.”

Ezekiel Is Israel's Watchman

33 The word of the Lord came to me: (DN)“Son of man, speak to (DO)your people and say to them, If (DP)I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their (DQ)watchman, and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and (DR)blows the trumpet and warns the people, then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, (DS)his blood shall be upon his own head. (DT)He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life. (DU)But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, (DV)that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand.

(DW)“So you, (DX)son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. (DY)Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. (DZ)If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, (EA)and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, (EB)that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. (EC)But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, (ED)that person shall die in his iniquity, (EE)but you will have delivered your soul.

Why Will You Die, Israel?

10 “And you, (EF)son of man, say to the house of Israel, Thus have you said: ‘Surely our transgressions and our sins are upon us, and (EG)we rot away because of them. (EH)How then can we live?’ 11 Say to them, (EI)As I live, declares the Lord God, (EJ)I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live; (EK)turn back, turn back from your evil ways, (EL)for why will you die, O house of Israel?

12 (EM)“And you, son of man, say to (EN)your people, (EO)The righteousness of the righteous shall not deliver him when he transgresses, (EP)and as for the wickedness of the wicked, he shall not fall by it when he turns from his wickedness, (EQ)and the righteous shall not be able to live by his righteousness[k] when he sins. 13 Though I say to the righteous that he shall surely live, yet (ER)if he trusts in his righteousness and does injustice, none of his righteous deeds shall be remembered, but in his injustice that he has done he shall die. 14 Again, (ES)though I say to the wicked, (ET)‘You shall surely die,’ yet (EU)if he turns from his sin and does what is just and right, 15 if the wicked (EV)restores the pledge, (EW)gives back what he has taken by robbery, and walks (EX)in the statutes of life, not doing injustice, he shall surely live; he shall not die. 16 (EY)None of the sins that he has committed shall be remembered against him. He has done what is just and right; he shall surely live.

17 “Yet (EZ)your people say, (FA)‘The way of the Lord is not just,’ when it is their own way that is not just. 18 (FB)When the righteous turns from his righteousness and does injustice, he shall die for it. 19 And (FC)when the wicked turns from his wickedness and does what is just and right, he shall live by this. 20 Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ O house of Israel, (FD)I will judge each of you according to his ways.”

Jerusalem Struck Down

21 In the (FE)twelfth year (FF)of our exile, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, (FG)a fugitive from Jerusalem came to me and said, (FH)“The city has been struck down.” 22 (FI)Now (FJ)the hand of the Lord had been upon me the evening before the fugitive came; and he had opened my mouth by the time the man came to me in the morning, so my mouth was opened, and I was no longer mute.

23 The word of the Lord came to me: 24 (FK)“Son of man, the inhabitants of these (FL)waste places in the land of Israel keep saying, (FM)‘Abraham was only one man, yet he got possession of the land; but (FN)we are many; the land is surely given us to possess.’ 25 Therefore say to them, Thus says the Lord God: (FO)You eat flesh with the blood and (FP)lift up your eyes to your idols and (FQ)shed blood; shall you then possess the land? 26 (FR)You rely on the sword, (FS)you commit abominations, and (FT)each of you defiles his neighbor's wife; shall you then possess the land? 27 Say this to them, Thus says the Lord God: (FU)As I live, surely those who are in (FV)the waste places shall fall by (FW)the sword, and whoever is in the open field I will give to (FX)the beasts to be devoured, and those who are in (FY)strongholds and in caves shall die by (FZ)pestilence. 28 (GA)And I will make the land a desolation and a waste, and (GB)her proud might shall come to an end, and (GC)the mountains of Israel shall be so desolate that none will pass through. 29 (GD)Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I have made the land a desolation and a waste because of all their abominations that they have committed.

30 “As for you, (GE)son of man, (GF)your people who talk together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, say to one another, each to his brother, ‘Come, and hear what the word is that comes from the Lord.’ 31 (GG)And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for (GH)with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain. 32 And behold, you are to them like one who sings lustful songs with a beautiful voice and (GI)plays[l] well on an instrument, for (GJ)they hear what you say, but they will not do it. 33 (GK)When this comes—and come it will!—(GL)then they will know that a prophet has been among them.”

Prophecy Against the Shepherds of Israel

34 The word of the Lord came to me: (GM)“Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel; prophesy, and say to them, even to the shepherds, Thus says the Lord God: (GN)Ah, shepherds of Israel (GO)who have been feeding yourselves! (GP)Should not shepherds feed the sheep? (GQ)You eat the fat, you clothe yourselves with the wool, (GR)you slaughter the fat ones, but you do not feed the sheep. (GS)The weak you have not strengthened, the sick you have not healed, (GT)the injured you have not bound up, (GU)the strayed you have not brought back, (GV)the lost you have not sought, and with force and (GW)harshness you have ruled them. (GX)So they were scattered, because there was no shepherd, and (GY)they became food for all the wild beasts. My sheep were scattered; they wandered over all the mountains and on every high hill. My sheep were scattered over all the face of the earth, (GZ)with none to search or seek for them.

“Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: (HA)As I live, declares the Lord God, surely because (HB)my sheep have become a prey, and my sheep have become food for all the wild beasts, since there was no shepherd, and because my shepherds have not searched for my sheep, but the shepherds have fed themselves, and have not fed my sheep, therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord: 10 Thus says the Lord God, (HC)Behold, I am against the shepherds, and (HD)I will require my sheep at their hand and (HE)put a stop to their feeding the sheep. (HF)No longer shall the shepherds feed themselves. (HG)I will rescue my sheep from their mouths, that they may not be food for them.

The Lord God Will Seek Them Out

11 “For thus says the Lord God: (HH)Behold, I, I (HI)myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. 12 As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on (HJ)a day of clouds and (HK)thick darkness. 13 And I will bring them out from the peoples (HL)and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land. And I will feed them on (HM)the mountains of Israel, by the ravines, and in all the inhabited places of the country. 14 (HN)I will feed them with good pasture, and on the mountain heights of Israel shall be their grazing land. (HO)There they shall lie down in good grazing land, and on rich pasture they shall feed on the mountains of Israel. 15 (HP)I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, (HQ)and I myself will make them lie down, declares the Lord God. 16 (HR)I will seek the lost, (HS)and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and (HT)the fat and the strong I will destroy.[m] I will feed them in justice.

17 “As for you, my flock, thus says the Lord God: (HU)Behold, I judge between sheep and sheep, between rams and (HV)male goats. 18 Is it not enough for you to feed on the good pasture, that you must tread down with your feet the rest of your pasture; and to drink of (HW)clear water, that you must muddy the rest of the water with your feet? 19 And must my sheep eat what you have trodden with your feet, and drink what you have muddied with your feet?

20 “Therefore, thus says the Lord God to them: Behold, I, I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. 21 Because you push with side and shoulder, and (HX)thrust at all the (HY)weak with your horns, till you have scattered them abroad, 22 I will rescue[n] my flock; (HZ)they shall no longer be a prey. And I will judge between sheep and sheep. 23 And (IA)I will set up over them one shepherd, (IB)my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. 24 And (IC)I, the Lord, will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them. (ID)I am the Lord; I have spoken.

The Lord's Covenant of Peace

25 (IE)“I will make with them a covenant of peace and (IF)banish wild beasts from the land, (IG)so that they may dwell securely in the wilderness and sleep in the woods. 26 And I will make them and the places all around my hill (IH)a blessing, and (II)I will send down the showers in their season; they shall be (IJ)showers of blessing. 27 (IK)And the trees of the field shall yield their fruit, and the earth shall yield its increase, (IL)and they shall be secure in their land. And (IM)they shall know that I am the Lord, when (IN)I break the bars of their yoke, and (IO)deliver them from the hand of those who enslaved them. 28 (IP)They shall no more be a prey to the nations, (IQ)nor shall the beasts of the land devour them. (IR)They shall dwell securely, and none shall make them afraid. 29 And I will provide for them (IS)renowned plantations so that (IT)they shall no more be consumed with hunger in the land, and no longer (IU)suffer the reproach of the nations. 30 And they shall know that (IV)I am the Lord their God with them, and that they, the house of Israel, are my people, declares the Lord God. 31 And you are my sheep, (IW)human sheep of my pasture, and I am your God, declares the Lord God.”

Prophecy Against Mount Seir

35 The word of the Lord came to me: (IX)“Son of man, (IY)set your face (IZ)against (JA)Mount Seir, and prophesy against it, and say to it, Thus says the Lord God: (JB)Behold, I am against you, Mount Seir, and (JC)I will stretch out my hand against you, (JD)and I will make you a desolation and a waste. (JE)I will lay your cities waste, and you shall become a desolation, and you shall know that I am the Lord. Because (JF)you cherished perpetual enmity and gave over the people of Israel to the power of the sword (JG)at the time of their calamity, (JH)at the time of their final punishment, therefore, (JI)as I live, declares the Lord God, I will prepare you for blood, and blood shall pursue you; (JJ)because you did not hate bloodshed, therefore blood shall pursue you. (JK)I will make Mount Seir a waste (JL)and a desolation, and I will cut off from it (JM)all who come and go. And I will fill (JN)its mountains with the slain. On your hills and in your valleys and in all (JO)your ravines (JP)those slain with the sword shall fall. (JQ)I will make you a perpetual desolation, and (JR)your cities shall not be inhabited. Then (JS)you will know that I am the Lord.

10 “Because you said, (JT)‘These two nations and these two countries shall be mine, and (JU)we will take possession of them’—although the (JV)Lord was there— 11 therefore, (JW)as I live, declares the Lord God, I will deal with you (JX)according to the anger and (JY)envy that you showed because of your hatred against them. And (JZ)I will make myself known among them, when I judge you. 12 And you shall know that I am the Lord.

(KA)“I have heard all the revilings that you uttered against the mountains of Israel, saying, ‘They are laid desolate; (KB)they are given us to devour.’ 13 And (KC)you magnified yourselves against me (KD)with your mouth, and multiplied your words against me; I heard it. 14 Thus says the Lord God: (KE)While the whole earth rejoices, I will make you desolate. 15 As you (KF)rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was desolate, so I will deal with you; you shall be desolate, (KG)Mount Seir, and all Edom, all of it. Then (KH)they will know that I am the Lord.
