But now for a short time loving-favor has been shown to us from the Lord our God. He has kept some of us alive to return to get a hold on His holy place, that our God may give light to our eyes, and give us some new life while we are under the power of Persia. Though we are slaves,(E) our God has not forsaken us in our bondage. He has shown us kindness(F) in the sight of the kings of Persia: He has granted us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins,(G) and he has given us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.
