Traveling through Canaan, they came to a place near Shechem, and set up camp beside the oak at Moreh. (This area was inhabited by Canaanites at that time.)

Then Jehovah appeared to Abram and said, “I am going to give this land to your descendants.” And Abram built an altar there to commemorate Jehovah’s visit. Afterwards Abram left that place and traveled southward[a] to the hilly country between Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he made camp, and made an altar to the Lord and prayed to him.

Abram traveled through the land(A) as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh(B) at Shechem.(C) At that time the Canaanites(D) were in the land. From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel(I) and pitched his tent,(J) with Bethel on the west and Ai(K) on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.(L)
