The Covenant of Circumcision

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old,^(A) the Lord appeared to him^(B) and said, “I am God Almighty^[a];^(C) walk before me faithfully and be blameless.^(D)

⁴ and that the Lord may keep his promise^(A) to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully^(B) before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’

⁶ Solomon answered, “You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful^(A) to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son^(B) to sit on his throne this very day.

²³ and said:

⁵ Hezekiah trusted^(A) in the Lord, the God of Israel. There was no one like him among all the kings of Judah, either before him or after him. ⁶ He held fast^(B) to the Lord and did not stop following him; he kept the commands the Lord had given Moses.
