Genesis 21:12-14

¹²God said to Abraham, Do not let it seem grievous and evil to you because of the youth and your bondwoman; in all that Sarah has said to you, do what she asks, for in Isaac shall your posterity be called.^(A)

¹³And I will make a nation of the son of the bondwoman also, because he is your offspring.

¹⁴So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a bottle of water and gave them to Hagar, putting them on her shoulders, and he sent her and the ^[a]youth away. And she wandered on [aimlessly] and lost her way in the wilderness of Beersheba.

Genesis 21:14 Ishmael was born when Abraham was eighty-six years old (Gen. 16:16), so Ishmael was fourteen when Isaac was born. Isaac was weaned (Gen. 21:8) at least three years later probably (II Chron. 31:16; II Maccabees 7:27).

New International Version

¹²But God said to him, “Do not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring^[a] will be reckoned.^(A) ¹³I will make the son of the slave into a nation^(B) also, because he is your offspring.”

¹⁴Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar.^(C) He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba.^(D)
