Rebekah said to her son Jacob,(A) “Look, I overheard your father say to your brother Esau, ‘Bring me some game and prepare me some tasty food to eat, so that I may give you my blessing in the presence of the Lord before I die.’(B) Now, my son, listen carefully and do what I tell you:(C) Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,(D) so I can prepare some tasty food for your father, just the way he likes it.(E) 10 Then take it to your father to eat, so that he may give you his blessing(F) before he dies.”

11 Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “But my brother Esau is a hairy man(G) while I have smooth skin. 12 What if my father touches me?(H) I would appear to be tricking him and would bring down a curse(I) on myself rather than a blessing.”

13 His mother said to him, “My son, let the curse fall on me.(J) Just do what I say;(K) go and get them for me.”

14 So he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and she prepared some tasty food, just the way his father liked it.(L) 15 Then Rebekah took the best clothes(M) of Esau her older son,(N) which she had in the house, and put them on her younger son Jacob. 16 She also covered his hands and the smooth part of his neck with the goatskins.(O) 17 Then she handed to her son Jacob the tasty food and the bread she had made.

18 He went to his father and said, “My father.”

“Yes, my son,” he answered. “Who is it?”(P)

19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn.(Q) I have done as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game,(R) so that you may give me your blessing.”(S)

20 Isaac asked his son, “How did you find it so quickly, my son?”

“The Lord your God gave me success,(T)” he replied.

21 Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Come near so I can touch you,(U) my son, to know whether you really are my son Esau or not.”

22 Jacob went close to his father Isaac,(V) who touched(W) him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, for his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau;(X) so he proceeded to bless him. 24 “Are you really my son Esau?” he asked.

“I am,” he replied.

25 Then he said, “My son, bring me some of your game to eat, so that I may give you my blessing.”(Y)

Jacob brought it to him and he ate; and he brought some wine and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come here, my son, and kiss me.”

27 So he went to him and kissed(Z) him(AA). When Isaac caught the smell of his clothes,(AB) he blessed him and said,

“Ah, the smell of my son
is like the smell of a field
    that the Lord has blessed.(AC)
28 May God give you heaven’s dew(AD)
    and earth’s richness(AE)
an abundance of grain(AF) and new wine.(AG)
29 May nations serve you
and peoples bow down to you.(AH)
Be lord over your brothers,
and may the sons of your mother bow down to you.(AI)
May those who curse you be cursed
and those who bless you be blessed.(AJ)

So Rebekah spoke to Jacob her son, saying, “Indeed I heard your father speak to Esau your brother, saying, ‘Bring me game and make [a]savory food for me, that I may eat it and bless you in the presence of the Lord before my death.’ Now therefore, my son, (A)obey my voice according to what I command you. Go now to the flock and bring me from there two choice kids of the goats, and I will make (B)savory food from them for your father, such as he loves. 10 Then you shall take it to your father, that he may eat it, and that he (C)may bless you before his death.”

11 And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, “Look, (D)Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth-skinned man. 12 Perhaps my father will (E)feel me, and I shall seem to be a deceiver to him; and I shall bring (F)a curse on myself and not a blessing.”

13 But his mother said to him, (G)Let your curse be on me, my son; only obey my voice, and go, get them for me.” 14 And he went and got them and brought them to his mother, and his mother (H)made [b]savory food, such as his father loved. 15 Then Rebekah took (I)the choice clothes of her elder son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. 16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. 17 Then she gave the savory food and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.

18 So he went to his father and said, “My father.”

And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?”

19 Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done just as you told me; please arise, sit and eat of my game, (J)that your soul may bless me.”

20 But Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have found it so quickly, my son?”

And he said, “Because the Lord your God brought it to me.”

21 Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come near, that I (K)may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob went near to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, “The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 And he did not recognize him, because (L)his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him.

24 Then he said, “Are you really my son Esau?”

He said, “I am.

25 He said, “Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, so (M)that my soul may bless you.” So he brought it near to him, and he ate; and he brought him wine, and he drank. 26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Come near now and kiss me, my son.” 27 And he came near and (N)kissed him; and he smelled the smell of his clothing, and blessed him and said:

“Surely, (O)the smell of my son
Is like the smell of a field
Which the Lord has blessed.
28 Therefore may (P)God give you
Of (Q)the dew of heaven,
Of (R)the fatness of the earth,
And (S)plenty of grain and wine.
29 (T)Let peoples serve you,
And nations bow down to you.
Be master over your brethren,
And (U)let your mother’s sons bow down to you.
(V)Cursed be everyone who curses you,
And blessed be those who bless you!”
