¹³ And behold, ^(A)the Lord stood ^[a]above it and said, “I am the Lord, ^(B)the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie, I will give it ^(C)to you and to ^(D)your ^[b]descendants. ¹⁴ Your ^[c]descendants will also be like ^(E)the dust of the earth, and you will ^[d]spread out ^(F)to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and ^(G)in you and in your ^[e]descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed. ¹⁵ Behold, ^(H)I am with you and ^(I)will keep you wherever you go, and ^(J)will bring you back to this land; for ^(K)I will not leave you until I have done what I have ^[f]promised you.” ¹⁶ Then Jacob ^(L)awoke from his sleep and said, “^(M)Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” ¹⁷ He was afraid and said, “^(N)How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.”

¹⁸ So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took ^(O)the stone that he had put ^[g]under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top. ¹⁹ He called the name of that place ^[h](P)Bethel; however, ^[i]previously the name of the city had been ^(Q)Luz. ²⁰ Then Jacob ^(R)made a vow, saying, “^(S)If God will be with me and will keep me on this journey that I ^[j]take, and will give me ^[k](T)food to eat and garments to wear, ²¹ and ^(U)I return to my father’s house in ^[l]safety, ^(V)then the Lord will be my God. ²² This stone, which I have set up as a pillar, ^(W)will be God’s house, and ^(X)of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.”

Jacob Is Named Israel

⁹ Then God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Paddan-aram, and He ^(A)blessed him. ^10 (B)God said to him,

Thus He called ^[b]him Israel. ¹¹ God also said to him,
