31 Now the Lord saw that Leah was [a]unloved, and He opened her womb, but Rachel was unable to have children. 32 Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and named him [b]Reuben, for she said, “Because the Lord has [c](A)seen my affliction; surely now my husband will love me.” 33 Then she conceived again and gave birth to a son, and said, “(B)Because the Lord has [d]heard that I am [e]unloved, He has therefore given me this son also.” So she named him Simeon. 34 And she conceived again and gave birth to a son, and said, “Now this time my husband will become [f]attached to me, because I have borne him three sons.” Therefore he was named (C)Levi. 35 And she conceived again and gave birth to a son, and said, “This time I will [g]praise the Lord.” Therefore she named him [h](D)Judah. Then she stopped having children.

Jacob’s Children

31 When the Lord saw that Leah was not loved,(A) he enabled her to conceive,(B) but Rachel remained childless. 32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son.(C) She named him Reuben,[a](D) for she said, “It is because the Lord has seen my misery.(E) Surely my husband will love me now.”

Bilhah conceived and bore Jacob a son. Then Rachel said, “God has [a](A)vindicated me, and has indeed heard my voice and has given me a son.” Therefore she named him [b]Dan. And Rachel’s slave Bilhah conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. So Rachel said, “With [c]mighty wrestling I have [d]wrestled with my sister, and I have indeed prevailed.” And she named him Naphtali.

When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she took her slave Zilpah and gave her to Jacob as a wife. 10 And Leah’s slave Zilpah bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, “[e]How fortunate!” So she named him [f]Gad. 12 And Leah’s slave Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 Then Leah said, “[g]Happy am I! For women (B)will call me happy.” So she named him [h]Asher.

14 Now in the days of wheat harvest Reuben went and found (C)mandrake fruits in the field, and brought them to his mother Leah. Then Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.” 15 But she said to her, “Is it a small matter for you to take my husband? And would you take my son’s mandrakes also?” So Rachel said, “Therefore he may sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.” 16 When Jacob came in from the field in the evening, Leah went out to meet him and said, “You must have relations with me, for I have indeed hired you with my son’s mandrakes.” So he slept with her that night. 17 God listened to Leah, and she conceived and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Then Leah said, “God has given me my [i]reward, because I gave my slave to my husband.” So she named him Issachar. 19 And Leah conceived again and bore a sixth son to Jacob. 20 Then Leah said, “God has endowed me with a good gift; finally my husband [j]will acknowledge me as his wife, because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun. 21 Afterward she gave birth to a daughter, and named her Dinah.

22 Then (D)God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her and (E)opened her womb. 23 So she conceived and gave birth to a son, and said, “God has (F)taken away my disgrace.” 24 And she named him Joseph, saying, “(G)May the Lord [k]give me another son.”

Jacob Prospers

25 Now it came about, when Rachel had given birth to Joseph, that Jacob said to Laban, “(H)Send me away, so that I may go to my own place and to my own country. 26 Give me my wives and my children (I)for whom I have served you, and let me go; for you yourself know my service which I have [l]rendered you.” 27 But Laban said to him, “If [m]it pleases you at all, stay with me; I have determined by divination (J)that the Lord has blessed me on your account.” 28 He [n]continued, “(K)Name me your wages, and I will give them.” 29 But Jacob said to him, “(L)You yourself know how I have served you and how your livestock have [o]fared with me. 30 For you had little before [p]I came, and it has [q]increased to a multitude, and the Lord has blessed you [r]wherever I turned. But now, when shall I provide for my own household also?” 31 So he said, “What shall I give you?” And Jacob said, “You shall not give me anything. If you will do this one thing for me, I will again pasture and keep your flock: 32 let me pass through your entire flock today, removing from there every (M)speckled or spotted sheep and every black sheep among the lambs, and the spotted or speckled among the goats; and those shall be my wages. 33 So my [s]honesty will answer for me later, when you come concerning my [t]wages. Every one that is not speckled or spotted among the goats, or black among the lambs, if found with me, will be considered stolen.” 34 Laban said, “[u]Good, let it be according to your word.” 35 So he removed on that day the striped or spotted male goats, and all the speckled or spotted female goats, every one with white on it, and all the black ones among the sheep, and put them in the [v]care of his sons. 36 And he put a distance of three days’ journey between himself and Jacob, and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.

37 Then Jacob [w]took fresh rods of poplar, almond, and plane trees, and peeled white stripes in them, exposing the white that was [x]in the rods. 38 He set the rods which he had peeled in front of the flocks in the drinking troughs, that is, in the watering channels where the flocks came to drink; and they mated when they came to drink. 39 So the flocks mated by the rods, and the flocks delivered striped, speckled, and spotted offspring. 40 Then Jacob separated the lambs, and [y]made the flocks face toward the striped and all the black in the flock of Laban; and he put his own herds apart, and did not put them with Laban’s flock. 41 Moreover, whenever the stronger of the flock were mating, Jacob would place the rods in the sight of the flock in the drinking troughs, so that they would mate by the rods; 42 but when the flock was sickly, he did not put them in; so the sickly were Laban’s, and the stronger were Jacob’s. 43 So (N)the man [z]became exceedingly prosperous, and had large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.

and she became pregnant and bore him a son. Then Rachel said, “God has vindicated me;(A) he has listened to my plea and given me a son.”(B) Because of this she named him Dan.[a](C)

Rachel’s servant Bilhah(D) conceived again and bore Jacob a second son. Then Rachel said, “I have had a great struggle with my sister, and I have won.”(E) So she named him Naphtali.[b](F)

When Leah(G) saw that she had stopped having children,(H) she took her servant Zilpah(I) and gave her to Jacob as a wife.(J) 10 Leah’s servant Zilpah(K) bore Jacob a son. 11 Then Leah said, “What good fortune!”[c] So she named him Gad.[d](L)

12 Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son. 13 Then Leah said, “How happy I am! The women will call me(M) happy.”(N) So she named him Asher.[e](O)

14 During wheat harvest,(P) Reuben went out into the fields and found some mandrake plants,(Q) which he brought to his mother Leah. Rachel said to Leah, “Please give me some of your son’s mandrakes.”

15 But she said to her, “Wasn’t it enough(R) that you took away my husband? Will you take my son’s mandrakes too?”

“Very well,” Rachel said, “he can sleep with you tonight in return for your son’s mandrakes.”(S)

16 So when Jacob came in from the fields that evening, Leah went out to meet him. “You must sleep with me,” she said. “I have hired you with my son’s mandrakes.”(T) So he slept with her that night.

17 God listened to Leah,(U) and she became pregnant and bore Jacob a fifth son. 18 Then Leah said, “God has rewarded me for giving my servant to my husband.”(V) So she named him Issachar.[f](W)

19 Leah conceived again and bore Jacob a sixth son. 20 Then Leah said, “God has presented me with a precious gift. This time my husband will treat me with honor,(X) because I have borne him six sons.” So she named him Zebulun.[g](Y)

21 Some time later she gave birth to a daughter and named her Dinah.(Z)

22 Then God remembered Rachel;(AA) he listened to her(AB) and enabled her to conceive.(AC) 23 She became pregnant and gave birth to a son(AD) and said, “God has taken away my disgrace.”(AE) 24 She named him Joseph,[h](AF) and said, “May the Lord add to me another son.”(AG)

Jacob’s Flocks Increase

25 After Rachel gave birth to Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, “Send me on my way(AH) so I can go back to my own homeland.(AI) 26 Give me my wives and children, for whom I have served you,(AJ) and I will be on my way. You know how much work I’ve done for you.”

27 But Laban said to him, “If I have found favor in your eyes,(AK) please stay. I have learned by divination(AL) that the Lord has blessed me because of you.”(AM) 28 He added, “Name your wages,(AN) and I will pay them.”

29 Jacob said to him, “You know how I have worked for you(AO) and how your livestock has fared under my care.(AP) 30 The little you had before I came has increased greatly, and the Lord has blessed you wherever I have been.(AQ) But now, when may I do something for my own household?(AR)

31 “What shall I give you?” he asked.

“Don’t give me anything,” Jacob replied. “But if you will do this one thing for me, I will go on tending your flocks and watching over them: 32 Let me go through all your flocks today and remove from them every speckled or spotted sheep, every dark-colored lamb and every spotted or speckled goat.(AS) They will be my wages.(AT) 33 And my honesty will testify for me in the future, whenever you check on the wages you have paid me. Any goat in my possession that is not speckled or spotted, or any lamb that is not dark-colored,(AU) will be considered stolen.(AV)

34 “Agreed,” said Laban. “Let it be as you have said.” 35 That same day he removed all the male goats that were streaked or spotted, and all the speckled or spotted female goats (all that had white on them) and all the dark-colored lambs,(AW) and he placed them in the care of his sons.(AX) 36 Then he put a three-day journey(AY) between himself and Jacob, while Jacob continued to tend the rest of Laban’s flocks.

37 Jacob, however, took fresh-cut branches from poplar, almond(AZ) and plane trees(BA) and made white stripes on them by peeling the bark and exposing the white inner wood of the branches.(BB) 38 Then he placed the peeled branches(BC) in all the watering troughs,(BD) so that they would be directly in front of the flocks when they came to drink. When the flocks were in heat(BE) and came to drink, 39 they mated in front of the branches.(BF) And they bore young that were streaked or speckled or spotted.(BG) 40 Jacob set apart the young of the flock by themselves, but made the rest face the streaked and dark-colored animals(BH) that belonged to Laban. Thus he made separate flocks for himself and did not put them with Laban’s animals. 41 Whenever the stronger females were in heat,(BI) Jacob would place the branches in the troughs in front of the animals so they would mate near the branches,(BJ) 42 but if the animals were weak, he would not place them there. So the weak animals went to Laban and the strong ones to Jacob.(BK) 43 In this way the man grew exceedingly prosperous and came to own large flocks, and female and male servants, and camels and donkeys.(BL)
