³⁰ So Jacob called the place Peniel,^[a] saying, “It is because I saw God face to face,^(A) and yet my life was spared.”

²⁴ And you said, “The Lord our God has shown us^(A) his glory and his majesty,^(B) and we have heard his voice from the fire. Today we have seen that a person can live even if God speaks with them.^(C)

²² When Gideon realized^(A) that it was the angel of the Lord, he exclaimed, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face!”^(B)

²³ But the Lord said to him, “Peace! Do not be afraid.^(C) You are not going to die.”^(D)

²² “We are doomed^(A) to die!” he said to his wife. “We have seen^(B) God!”

⁵ “Woe^(A) to me!” I cried. “I am ruined!^(B) For I am a man of unclean lips,^(C) and I live among a people of unclean lips,^(D) and my eyes have seen^(E) the King,^(F) the Lord Almighty.”^(G)

¹⁷ When I saw him, I fell at his feet^(A) as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me^(B) and said: “Do not be afraid.^(C) I am the First and the Last.^(D)

¹⁰ and saw^(A) the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli,^(B) as bright blue as the sky.^{(C) 11} But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw^(D) God, and they ate and drank.^(E)
