⁴⁰ You shall be in charge of my palace,^(A) and all my people are to submit to your orders.^(B) Only with respect to the throne will I be greater than you.^(C)”

Joseph in Charge of Egypt

⁴¹ So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “I hereby put you in charge of the whole land of Egypt.”^{(D) 42} Then Pharaoh took his signet ring^(E) from his finger and put it on Joseph’s finger. He dressed him in robes^(F) of fine linen^(G) and put a gold chain around his neck.^{(H) 43} He had him ride in a chariot^(I) as his second-in-command,^[a](J) and people shouted before him, “Make way^[b]!”^(K) Thus he put him in charge of the whole land of Egypt.^(L)

¹⁵ When Mordecai^(A) left the king’s presence, he was wearing royal garments of blue and white, a large crown of gold^(B) and a purple robe of fine linen.^(C) And the city of Susa held a joyous celebration.^(D)

⁷ The king summoned the enchanters,^(A) astrologers^[a](B) and diviners.^(C) Then he said to these wise^(D) men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing and tells me what it means will be clothed in purple and have a gold chain placed around his neck,^(E) and he will be made the third^(F) highest ruler in the kingdom.”^(G)
