Joseph Sends Nine of His Brothers Back to Canaan

As governor of the country, Joseph was selling grain to everyone. So when Joseph’s brothers arrived, they bowed in front of him with their faces touching the ground. As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them. But he acted as if he didn’t know them and spoke harshly to them. “Where did you come from?” he asked them.

“From Canaan, to buy food,” they answered.

Even though Joseph recognized his brothers, they didn’t recognize him.

Now Joseph was the governor of the land,(A) the person who sold grain to all its people.(B) So when Joseph’s brothers arrived, they bowed down to him with their faces to the ground.(C) As soon as Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them, but he pretended to be a stranger and spoke harshly to them.(D) “Where do you come from?”(E) he asked.

“From the land of Canaan,” they replied, “to buy food.”

Although Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.(F)
